Personally I would go for the Desire. Having had the 3GS and the Desire, the desire spanks the 3GS. If u do a google search on iphone vs htc desire, u will see various videos showing both.

One advantage to the desire is that you do not have to jail break it to put various apps on and customise it how you want.

I have been using a Desire for a Month or so now on Orange and am very happy.

I use it mainly as a business tool with Exchange Syncing for Mail, Calendars etc and have found it very reliable. Ive never used an iPhone, but an accountant friend of mine has just ditched his 3GS for the Desire after using mine.

Definately recommend.

In all honesty though, for a set of managers as an email device, don't you think the iPhone would be easier to use?

Clearer UI, easier settings screens, etc?

we are currently looking at getting new phones for managers and in abit of a struggle of which ones to get, thought i would as you people :confused2:

If you're asking me what I think I like best as a phone and communications device, then I would answer "iPhone". I'd point to the reasons that Domino has outlined just above my post to justify that, too.

If you're asking which your business should be buying then I would say "whichever one you will find easier to support". E.G. do you have any iphone enthusiasts in your IT team already, for example, or do you know someone who has already got an Android phone configured just how you like it who is willing to help produce a crib sheet for that, etc.

I have had a iPhone for 3 years or so now (2G, then 3G), and just switched to a Desire. Think its excellant. Easily intergrated into Exchange (as it had already been set for the iphone), so no extra work needed there. I'm not anti-iphone, if I hadnt seen the Desire, I would have kept using the 3G. The Desire, just has a nicer "feel".

Of course, Im comparing to the 3G (not even S), so as a comparision to the iPhone 4 might be more equal.

There's no real difference between them.

Toss a coin, go by price - whatever.

HTC Desire won't play IPlayer yet as it doesn't have Flash - but its promised "later in year".

To paraphrase an old saying - no one ever lost their job buying the management shiny new IPhones :)

There is a huge difference, Desire you can make your own apps, you dont need to jailbreak it to customise it, and you have more freedoms in terms of usability, you get more bang for buck from the marketplace compared to the app store.

Do research on it, look at what your needs are and go from there.

I have mine playing iplayer perfectly AND supporting flash without an issue.

This much is true, but do not go for them because they are the in thing, go for something you can get maximum usability from.

Sorry to tear your post apart simon! :)

Yeah, but this isn't for a geeky tech - its management.

Personally, I wouldn't want much in the way of customization for them - and the app store being much more locked down means there's less spyware in it.

I've got both and for ease of use with regards to managers, the iPhone wins in my opinion. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but I've found ease of use paramount to their success with end users especially for email as Domino said earlier.

Please reread and emphasise the "real" in the sentence :)

We are talking toys for the boys here (Sorry - i mean useful management tools :) )

And how have you acheived this without rooting the device and installing a hacked OS? (which is not something you'd really want to be doing on new corporate phones :) )

Anyone who has read any of my post will know how much it pains me to say this but for 'limited skill' managment user simpler is better, I would have actually recommended blackberry but as that is not one of the option I'd have to point - cringinly and reluctantly - to the iPhone.

It does have user managment and lockdown options along with Activesync support like Windows Mobile so from a technical standpoint it is an easier setup job than the Blackberry. It is realitivly simple to operate and even includes an extremely rudimentary encryption option wich you will want switched on in the case of it getting lost with sensitive data about student potentially stored in email on it.

The config tool is here Apple - Support - iPhone - Enterprise and I'm not aware of anything simmilar for Android. You should be able to lock their configuration down just enough that they are more difficult to break short of them activly jailbreaking them.

Just be careful that they don't use getting iPhones as an excuse to buy more silly expencive Apple accesories like MacBooks to make their phone 'cooler'.

The real crime is the need for iTunes for music/filesync as this is still a terrible program (by design I'm sure) under Windows and making me of all people recommend an Apple product. On a directly related note I'm off to be ill ::puke:

Note: If the new Windows Phone 7 was out I'd probably be recommending that instead.

As we're talking about buying for a business rather than an individual, I wonder what the business case is for the sort of customisations that require jailbreaking an iphone...
