Finding IP address of Linksys WAP200

I have a Linksys WAP200 Wireless G box which if I plug it into the network currently comes up on Wireless kit as available - but insecure.

 

I have downloaded the manual and tried various IP settings 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.245 but can't pull up the management box in a web browser. Tried settings (turning off proxy, adding the ip as an exception) but still no joy. I even tried allocating a static IP address to the MAC but still no joy.

 

Anything obvious to you good folk that I'm not doing?

Could you not just reset it and then connect it directly to a pc, then using the default settings reconfigure it to what you want? Trays what I did with a similar problem.

in a cmd prompt run arp -a to see the routing table and see if theres a match to the mac address.

MAKE SURE you update the FW to the latest !!!

 

The one before newest FW has a bug that when used with any other WAP200`s on the same network they ping each other continually after about an hour.

 

We have 12 and it brought the network to a halt!!!

WAP as in wireless access point that is connected to a router ? If connected to a router then you can go to the web interface page for the router and it should show you the locally attached devices with each ip address for each device ( one of which will be the WAP ) - if not am guessing there should be a utility either on the disc or from the linksys website that will allow you to search your local network to find the WAP 200 device and show you what ip address it is getting.

 

That or maybe something like angry ip scanner to scan your subnet

I have the FW update saved on disc - I see it's an image but can't see how to deploy it?

Catch 22 there I think as to upload the fw you need the option on the web interface, but the problem is be can't get to the web interface to upload it.

Do a factory reset on the WAP then connect it directly to a laptop with a network cable - it'll most likely have DHCP on by default after the reset which should hand out to the laptop, you'll then be able to see the gateway IP and off you go

If it's an access point and not a router it probably won't be running DHCP. If you have the original software CD, there should be a piece of software that searches for WAP's, just make sure it's on the same network segment.

You should be able to do it without the software, just search the Linksys site and find out what the default address is set when its reset to factory defaults, then set a pc to the same ip range, connect it with a cable and just log on to the web admin page. Googling gives the default address as 192.168.1.254, reset it to factory defaults by holding in the "Reset" button on the back of unit for 45 seconds while it is powered on.

Thanks guys for all the extremely useful suggestions above - I had to reset the notebooks network setting to 192.168.1.2 then cable connect after a reset of the WAP200 and at last I'm in. Now my problem is trying to get the Firmware to upgrade. I downloaded the Image file WAP200-FW-2.0.1.3ETSI-K9 and from the browser interface in Admin located that file for the upgrade - the message came up telling me it would take a few minutes. 15 minutes later I go to the Admin Pages again and it's still showing the old Firmware?

Tried that - it didn't work. I was trying to run the image file from a memory stick - the Firmware update accepts it but then not a lot happens and it's clear that it's not worked. On Monday I'm going to move the file to the desktop and try it from there and see if that helps.

Sorted now - it was the Firmware update needed to be on the desktop to run!
