disable sd cards

hello all does any one have any advice about how i can block/hide access to sd cards on student laptops, we have blocked the use of usb pen drives but clearly they can circumnavigate this restriction with sd card usage.

 

ideally the solution will be apllied at gpo level (windows 2008)

Here's what you want Disable removable media through Windows Server 2008's Group Policy configuration | Servers and Storage | TechRepublic.com this will allow you to disable removable storage which included SD cards. If you can find out the device class of SD cards then you can disable them specificly or simply set all removable storage to read only.

if not if its xp you can use devcon to disable the card reader with a small script something like just change the end bit to the device id of the card reader

 

"\\server\NETLOGON\scripts\disable webcam\i386\devcon.exe" disable "usb\vid_04f2&Pid_b128*"

You can also remove the relevant driver files from your master images and add back as necessary for staff machines.

 

(works for usbstor.inf and usbstor.sys on XP)
