Info needed from BGfL users (Brummies)

Does anyone know much about the proxy servers that the BGfL use?

 

I believe a lot of schools use eduproxy.bgfl.org to connect to the internet, but that doesn't seem to work with internet logs etc. I've seen the proxy address changed in one of my other schools to something like proxy.schoolname.bgfl.org with a different port. This then also requires each user to enter a username and password each time they open a web browser, which is how the logging works. Enabling this also makes it easier for the kids to access their e-mail once I have set them all up with user accounts.

 

Not entirely sure if I have the proxy address accurate though and have no idea what the port is. Can't find any info on this on the BGfL website either.

 

Can anyone shed any light?

Depends on if your a Plus school or not. The proxy.schoolname.bgfl.org:3128 should prompt your for the username password etc set in SINA. Your best bet is to speak to Link2ICT.

You should always set the proxy to eduproxy.bgfl.org, even if you are BGfL Plus. If you are a BGfL Plus school, eduproxy.bgfl.org will take care of it. Using eduproxy.bgfl.org provides resillience. If the Plus proxy goes down or your local proxy (i.e. imimic server) goes down, just inform Link2ict and they will redirect appropriately, without you having to make any proxy changes in your browser.

I cannot get any control over the filter then though, can I? I also cannot see what students have been doing (not that being able to makes much difference anyway - I can only see the last 800 web connections. Taking into account all the adverts and pictures etc, this only means about the last ten minutes).

If you are a BGfL Plus Full Proxy school, then eduproxy.bgfl.org (i.e. your local imimic server) will redirect you to BGfL Plus proxy anyway. This happens due to the configuration of your local imimic server. This should not affect your control over filtering. If you have specific questions, you may be better off sending an email to Link2ICT Helpdesk.

Couldn't you put your own proxy/filter in, which points to your eduproxy.bgfl.org box, and point all your work stations at your proxy? You should then be in full control of your filtering and, if you use a decent proxy, see as much history as you like. You haven't bypassed your LEAs filtering, in fact your web access is now double filtered for extra purity.

There are some future developments as regards filtering on BGfL. As Shakoor and others have said talk to the Link2ICT helpdesk as they will be able to advise you further on these issues.

i not using my imimic server, i want to make use of it for something else. do you reckon bgfl will shout if i rebuild it as something else.

Yes they will, as the Immic server is part of your managed internet connection, and along with the Cisco 3550 switch are BGFL network kit.

 

As Shakoor and I have said above, talk to Link2ICT as they will be able to advise on how the IMMIC fits into the overall network picture.
