CC3 to Vanilla Network. Last Stages, Error message when logging in.

Hi Guys,

 

We are in the progress of testing a new vanilla network going away from CC3.

We are doing this on XP for the moment and we are at the last stages of testing before we go LIVE during the summer.

 

We have done this on an RM ONE machine and have managed to completely create a student profile just on XP, it's extremely fast, faster than CC3 (cough). However when you log in and get to the desktop a very long error message appears.

 

I have attached the photo of the message.

 

Please let me know what you might think the error message meens and how we should remove this. It appears all the time when you log in.

lookslike you have not setup desktop folder redirection properly, Try disabling the destop folder redirection in group policy and see if the error disappears.

Make sure that "Move the contents of Desktop to the new location" for Desktop on Folder Redirection is disabled.

We are running CC3 and a vanilla windows network, however the problem we may get is if we change this setting, would this effect the current CC3 network? Just a thought.

You should have isolated the Vanilla GPO's from the RMCC3 GPO's. When I undertake a migration of this nature I usually create a new test OU structure for the Vanilla workstations and place the Computer and User objects into separate OUs beneath the new Vanilla OU.

You can then block GPO inheritance and ensure any modification only affect the new objects in the new Vanilla OU.

have you tried redirecting to a network location (\\server\desktop$ for example). Bare in mind that the folder you are redirecting to has to exist in advance. The policy will not create it at first logon as all it is doing is changing a registry key for the location of the desktop. Windows relies on it already being there. One windows XP the default path to the all users desktop is:

c:\documents and setting\all users\desktop

As others have said, create a new OU and change the redirects for desktop, start menu and my documents

Cheers for all your help, we will look into this. We're just tight on time to do everything perfect such as creating new OU's.

Creating new OU's is the best option when you find the time and with SP1 for Windows 7 available for public beta testing this month it might also be worth doing some pre-staging and creating OUs, GPOs etc. ready for a move to Windows 7.

 

Another RM bites the dust.....

now... this might be helpful it might not. we had this happen on a large scale before. tried EVERYTHING WE COULD. Boss restarted all our servers when I concluded I could not fix it and this solved the issue. So it could be worth a try restarting the file servers that the desktop redirection goes to.

 

Really dunno about this but that was our experience xD

Id go along with the folder redirection settings, make sure you disable them and test, and then re-enable them and see if the problem persists. Folder redirection can be tricky. Also make sure the permissions are set correctly on the locations where you are redirecting folders to.
