I want to stream the world cup tommorow by capturing BBC live and streaming it to everyone else by VLC, but the stream lags behind by nearly 2 minutes, obviously no good if others have got the radio/TV on... Also which ways best for multicasting on VLC? Cheers
AngryTechnician Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 I've just been testing mine and am only getting a few seconds delay. I'm capturing from a DVB-T tuner, and streaming using the 'RTP / MPEG Transport Stream' setting on address 239.255.1.1:5004, with no transcoding. Uses about 3Mbps, which isn't the most efficient video stream, but I'd rather that than saturate my Internet connection.

Can see the our internet slowing to a halt though anyway! Heres to blocking *.*

DrCheese Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 (edited) Doing the same as Angry Tech, DVB-T card in a PC and then VLC to stream it out. I don't do any transcoding on the server side, but the raw freeview stream isn't much bigger than 4/5mbps. Works pretty well, had the afternoon games and the budget displayed on the staff room screen for the past few days Although annoyingly due to the way our network is currently configured, I can only multicast within each vlan and making big changes just for the football is a no no. Not a issue tho as I have at least one display screen or server within each vlan which I can use to rebroadcast the stream from the TV card system. I did manage to get up to 150 odd connections via unicast mode direct to the server that is streaming the TV, so it may not be necessary depending on how many clients you'll have watching the game. Out of interest what TV tuner are you using? I can't get VLC to work with my Hauppauge WinTV Nova-T 500. Using a Hauppauge 1300 in Windows 2003 here. I couldn't get it to pick up any channels in Windows 2008 and I didn't really want to faff about trying to solve it so reimaged it down to 2003 which worked fine. I have to say tho, I'm very impressed with VLC. Brilliant piece of software. The only real issue I have with it is that there is no built in autotune for it, so I had to find out the frequency/program information using other software. Edited June 23, 2010 by DrCheese

DrCheese Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Ended up just sticking with the unicast only mode, was absolutely perfect, save for a few ms lag between each room tho I suspect that was just down to vlc caching on each machine rather than anything else. Was funny hearing the cheering pass through the school like a Mexican wave tho Internet connection slowed to a crawl during the game, so seems it was worthwhile

AngryTechnician Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 I don't know of a way to capture the iPlayer feed. If you can capture it, VLC can probably stream it, but that first bit is the big hurdle.

Popular Post AngryTechnician Posted July 25, 2010 Popular Post Posted July 25, 2010 Quick update on this: I eventually got around to trying out DVB streaming on Linux, and have put together a guide for turning an old PC with a few dual-tuner DVB-T cards in it into an IPTV box that streams every channel on Freeview simultaneously. How to stream EVERY channel from Freeview onto your network I found it an interesting little project, and something useful to do with one of the old machines we would otherwise be disposing of this year. 6
