home directories renamed

Don't know if anyone has come across this one. I have a number of home directories on our system that had changes their name to 'My Documents'. Now if I change them back to the correct name all the other wrongly named directories change as well?? It doesn't affect users, they connect as normal.

Have you done a directory listing on the command line to compare? Explorer seems to have a lot of exciting quirks when one of the hidden .ini files that makes special folders special gets copied somewhere it's not expecting! I've had a few that appear as "Joe's documents" when the actual path if you navigated down through it is still /home/joe/stuff etc

Do you have any Vista, Windows 7 or Server 2008 terminal servers?

I can browse to the correct folders using the UNC path.

It happens when the students log on to a windows 7 machine. If you delete the desktop.ini file from within the folder it will restore their original names but if they log in again on a windows 7 machine they change back. We have yet to find a proper fix for this. You may also find students cannot access their files through "My Documents" and instead have to go through My Computer to get to their share

I think if you create a sub directory called documents it will stop it from happening.

Yes i am afraid so. I think with windows 7 it will default to that folder when you open documents.

Adding the 'Documents' folder and then renaming the folder seems to have worked! Should shut the ICT teachers up for a while at least!

I found out that when Windows 7 creates a new profile for a user it overwrites the desktop.ini file with the following:

 

[.ShellClassInfo]

LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21770

IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-112

IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll

IconIndex=-235

 

So it has taken out all the previous details about the owner so that is why it changes.
