A sample AUP for staff

When I last wrote my staff AUP, I looked around at a few samples and was never really happy with them, so ended up writing what turned out to be a much more extensive one that many of the examples.

 

The policy was rubber-stamped by SMT last term, so they are happy with it. However, it's never really been reviewed by anyone else I'd class as a techy, so I've decided to open it to public scrutiny. The added bonus for you, of course, is that you can thieve it to help with your own.

 

It's on the wiki. Any constructive feedback welcome.

I only have 2 comments:

1) the DCSF is now the DfE

2) In your social networking section you may wish to include something about gaming. Both my school and the one where I'm a governor prohibit staff playing games against students over the internet whether using game consoles such as the PS3 or on websites.

Interesting one; will raise that for discussion. May I ask if there was any specific rationale behind it besides the socialising aspect and associated blurring of teacher/friend lines?

It started on the recommendation of the Kent e-Safety adviser, Rebecca Avery. She pointed out that social interaction over the internet isn't just using Facebook, but that people can communicate when using PS3, XBox, etc. None of this is recorded and if parents started throwing round allegations that Mr X was making improper suggestions while on the xBox with little Jack, how does Mr X clear his name? (xBoxers can use a headset to talk to each other.) I'm not an expert on the other consoles, but I gather that PS3's security isn't great.

 

Two members of staff at my school are parents at the school where I'm governor. We added this to my school's staff AUP and introduced it in staff training. The aforementioned parents came up to me afterwards, extremely concerned, because their sons were regularly on the xBox with their teachers. I reassured them that I was sure there was nothing untoward going on and then phoned the other school! They promptly adjusted their AUP (they already had facebook banned between staff and students) and issued a ban on gaming websites and game console contact too.

 

I hadn't meant to open a can of worms at my governor school, but it just goes to show how easily it can happen.

 

 

We have also banned ineraction with former pupils under the age of 18 (as has my governor school) - I can't remember if you have this in your policy

As soon as SMT get around to bringing it up with the School Council. We want to involve the pupils in wording it.

looking at AUPs now, that sure is a very good Staff AUP. We're looking at a student AUP now and it seems an endless task and becomes more like a list of rules!

Sorry but I am also chasing the same as Griff. I quickly looked at the AUP on the wiki but before I had chance to compare it to what we had the wiki went down and has been down since. Any chance it is located anywhere else or can someone send me a copy please?

Unfortunately I don't have a copy of the template anywhere else. If the wiki remains down I will reverse engineer it from our finished AUP, but I don't have the time to do it immediately.

Is there any movement on the student AUP? We are getting sick of the kids running amok with equipment as there is no clear framework to deal with it!

 

The staff AUP has been borrowed, modified, and submitted for aproval, as our current aup is, lets say, Not As Good As This One! Many thanks!

Not sure if that's directed at me Oaktech, but my pupil one went up on the wiki a while ago. It's after the staff one on this page. It's intended for primary age though, as I don't work in a secondary school.
