Year 11 backup

So now that our Y11's are now no longer in schopol except for revision and exams, I am looking at the best way to backup their Home Folders as part of our data retention planning

 

What I want to know is the best way to back this data up?

 

I have Backup Exec 2010 and want to shove it all onto a specific tape that is only to be used for this event each year, but I dont want it to be accidentaly deleted or viewed

 

can you encrypt a backup tape? can you append to an encrypted tape?

If so what are the pros/cons? ie if BE2010 was reinstalled a year or so down the line, could we still recover the encrypted data from the tape?

Yep, i can't see why not.

 

 

What we do is, we have a server with plenty of space on it. We use it for archiving logs etc. All the old folder live in there.

To stop it being used again I would use my favourite anti tamper material............................ Sellotape . Backup, stick it it a case, put a nice big label and date on it and then proceed to wrap in sellotape. People will think twice about trying to get the tape out.

As for your other answers I don't know we do a little spring cleaning of the areas for MP3s stupid pics etc then compress and bung on a few DVDs. I know they are not supposed to last forever in storage but best we can do.

Starting to wonder if @chrish; may be right with a big label and sellotape rather than risk losing the encryption keys....

We organise our backups with 13 monthly backups, with the 13th being a full backup in the summer break that we retain for 2 years (to cover them through A Level or GCSE)

Don't forget there is normally a tab on backup tapes to protect the tape from accidental deletion.

 

On our AIT4 tapes its on the side orange.

Why do you need to encrypt the data as it is just their home folders it cannot identify the user to someone address or Home can it?.

 

We just burn to DVDs and store in secure locked environment which only we have the keys to under the year group. Saves messing about with Tapes for when we want to restore.

 

Done this for the past 8 years and students religiously come back year upon year for copies of their work which we graciously burn to CD for them, to which they are very grateful.

Just stick ours onto DVD, that is if the RAID array in the server this year doesn't fail and loose all its data before I get chance to burn it to DVD!!! I tell thee my 7110 just finished copying the work to it 3 days before it failed!
