I do hope everyone is well, and gearing up for the weekend!

Just wandered what peoples thoughts were on offsite backup - what do you use at the moment?

As in online backup or taking backups offsite?

The first is a no go with a 10Mb link and the amount of data that gets changed daily for us.

We have a D2D2D solution where we take an external drive offsite each week. I'd love to use a proper offsite backup solution but I just don't see it being very reliable on a 10Mb connection.

Have you thought about upgrading your connection?

We currently use D2D2T, with a twice weekly tape collection.

However, now our Boston and London offices are both using Exagrid Dedupe backup devices, we'll be using the replication options within them to backup across the WAN to each office. Then monthly offsite tapes.

Should be a winner

We did, 3 years ago - from a 2MB connection. We can't do any more, as it is LEA provided and we are pretty rural.

No.

But I do get to pay £30,000 a year for the privilege of the 10Mb LES.

cant you complain?

You can always complain. Wether it will do any good is entirely another matter. IME of these things, the answer is almost universally "no".

Really LEAs etc. should be putting offsite backup servers in their central location - as they generally have a fairly contended internet uplink.

I use a D2D2T which is housed in a different building from the servers. The only data I get backup offsite is my fms and sims data which is housed by our local authority

We only have a 4Mb link and don't have a problem with offsite backups.

I do agree, and it does depend on how much change you have during the working day.. and if you think about it most word files etc are onlya couple of kb so assume it would be fine :) just have to be aware of any media/graphics that could cause an issue, :) good stuff though
