Issues with i-tunes on Windows network

I've been asked to put i-tunes on some wireless netbooks. I've heard of issues with profiles etc anyone on here using i-tunes sucessfully on a Windows network?

I think the profiles issues that you are talking about is that it stores it's data (in xp atleast) in "\My Docs\My Music\iTunes Library\" thus when you have several gigabytes of music and the user profiles syncs at log{on/off}.....

 

Also from memory its EULA prohibits installing it via network services such as group policy rollouts.

agreed this then becomes and issue when a laptop has gone home and had any number of disc loaded by users who do not understand how the system works. I found 1 headteacher with a 7 gb profile after he spent a weekend "uploading" his music collection

Hmm yes I've noticed that it syncs data which could be a pain over wireless. I've also noticed that if you don't untick the correct box at first run it tries to convert files that it finds into an apple format

I'm going to get a nano to play with later, someone bought one in yesterday but I couldn't get anything off it as it's formatted for OSX. Should I be able to Windows format it and then just connect it like a pen drive to get content off of it without the need for i-tunes?

Just wondering, why do you need iTunes on laptops around the school? If it's for synching iPods/pad/touches then surelly a desktop machine would be better due to space?

Sigh yes I was wondering the same. Someone came in and said that they wanted to be able to take the nano and a laptop so they can download stuff on the move, they said that i-tunes was required to download from the nano (something that wouldn't surprise me with Apple) but I'm now doubting this so I'm going to find out. If I can avoid installing that software I will.

well once you have it formatted for Windows you can download the vids without i-tunes but they're mp4 files anyway so you can't open them in movie maker Ahhhggghhhh

Policy in most of my schools is that iTunes is to be, quite rightly, treated as an infection and removed on sight. Cant think of a legitimate reason to have it in school.

I've encountered that 7-8GB My Docs sync problem - or rather it would sync perfectly, but they kept running out of server quota.

Best to ban on what is essentially business equipment, but if you can't then somewhere on the official iTunes site there is a proper guide on how to move it's media library outside of the user's profile.
