DarrenShan Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Can anyone recommend a large scale On-line backup solution? I'm not talking about Drop-Box, Carbonite etc but a fully managed, multi Terra-byte solutions such as those offered by Iron Mountain? 1
Soulfish Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Tectrade - Protecting Data - Managing Data Growth - Simplifying Infrastructure is one that I know about 1
dhicks Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Can anyone recommend a large scale On-line backup solution? Thanks, good question. I'm thinking of looking at something similar - I hope to convince the Bursar to buy us a decent sized file server, around 12TB, and was wondering about off-site backups. Can anyone mention any guidline prices for storing 12+ TB of data? Is using Amazon S3 a realistic option? -- David Hicks
kmount Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 I seen a demo from Plan B DR (Plan B Disaster Recovery Plc) the other day which looked pretty stunning. 1

It may be cheaper to purchase a storage server of some kind and colocate it yourself in a data centre not too far away? That way you can do the initial backup and from then onwards only transfer the deltas. A similar idea is to team up with another local school and do the same thing, but into their server room (and they do the same with yours). That way you don't have the colo costs. With AWS import (AWS Import/Export) you could get the initial transfer done without worrying about how long it's going to take. But for 12tb you're still looking at at least $1800/month just in storage costs. Backup isn't cheap unfortunately 1
wesleyw Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Gigasoft do this to we've been using them for the last year. Wes 1

Now, there's an excellent idea - there's a boy's school (we're all girls) that we do a fair bit of stuff with, we could possibly use them. Great idea, thanks. -- David Hicks
button_ripple Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Gigasoft do this to we've been using them for the last year. Wes Another +1 for gigasoft, we had a trial from them recently and they were brilliant. They were a bit to pricey for what we wanted though.
MYK-IT Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Through our LEA / SIMS support we use Attix 5 Software for remote backup of our SIMS Data. Sorry, No idea of costs.
slinkytech Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 We have just signed up to this Online Backup been looking for a solution for along time now with regards to backing up MIS Database's especially as an encrypted external backup is required now i think so this is just what we was looking for and the cost was great! only done the MIS Database at the moment but looking to backup our other SQL Databases, Exchange Mailboxes etc but just waiting on some Education Pricing as it can be quite expensive when you have 2,500+ mailboxes.
Danielle Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Hi Slinkytech, Does it charge on the amount of data or one fixed fee? Also do you keep a local back up as well as online?
DarrenShan Posted June 17, 2010 Author Posted June 17, 2010 Thanks for everyone's comments - I've spoken to a few of the companies mentioned and I'm in the process of sorting out a few quotes.
