Becta's Home Access scheme

Can anyone tell me in plain English how the Home Access scheme works, particularly, how schools and parents sign up for it?

 

I've been meaning to do something about this for months. The news of Becta's soon demise has spurred me to do something before they're gone.

 

Typically of Becta, their website has pages of text telling us how wonderful the scheme is, without any useful information like how to get started.

Home Access - Home Access

 

This is the main site for the Home Access Scheme. I've applied for the info for schools, but not received it yet. I think it is a case of refering parents to the phoneline for a chat to see if they may be eligible and if they are a pack is sent direct to the parents address. So i guess as far as school are concerned it is a case of giving out the info.

 

Like I said, i'm in pretty much the same place as you just trying to work it out, so please correct me if i'm mistaken.

As I understand it, they've given out 80% of the grants, so your parents will have to move quickly to get their applications in. Although there's lots of detail, the rule of thumb is: Parents of children in KS2 and 3, who qualify for free school meals, should phone the grant line (0333 200 1004) to request a pack.

Can't help wondering if this scheme has already had its day - both interms of volume and because BECTA is soon to disappear.

Our LA were one of the 2 or 3 to manage this themselves with no school involement. We pushed it in our schools newsletters and through our PSA's and Transition workers at our feeder primaries - I just wonder how many of our students benefited from the scheme.
