Are any schools running anti spyware programmes, if so what? I have recently run the Grisoft Anti Spyware free online scan (formerly Ewido) and it picked up a significant number of entries on some workstations. We have Sophos running as antivirus but I'm thinking that now prehaps we need to consider installing anti spyware across the school.

I am using Grisoft AVG Anti-Malware Network Edition. It is a antivirus and anti spyware package. And it is reasonably cheap to purchase. I paid £6.26 per pc for 2 years (price for 300 pc's).

 

I do find that it does slow a pc down when it runs a system scan. But if you schedule over a lunch hour or end of day/early evening it avoids problems with users complaining of slow running machines.

 

Also they give a very large educational discount. If i remember rightly i think i got between 40% and 60% discount

No, we don't bother. We set up the program files directory permissions to stop them writing files there and remove the kids ability to install activex controls and that seems to stop the majority of spyware in its tracks. We've not had any installed in a long time.

We use CounterSpy from Sunbelt Software ... it has saved a serious amount of hassle with student laptops and reasonably priced too.

I've spoken to Alex Eckelberry, the head honcho @ sunbelt - they seem to be the most switched-on anti-spyware company around, and I would have no hesitation in recommending their software.

I looked into this in the past (I assume that prices have come down because they were expensive back then). The two main ones that I liked were CounterSpy and WebRoot Anti-Spyware. Both have central management consoles too.

 

Currently the only defenses that I use are heavily locked-down users and the malware protection offered by Sophos (a basic anti-spyware system).
