Casio did a demo for us. Wasn't blown away by the brightness/image quality but the life of the light source and the fact that it doesn't degrade like a traditional projector lamp seemed to outweigh that considerably. Personally, I hate DLP projectors but I'd have no problem if I started seeing them in our school.

How far from the board and how big an image are you wanting?

Too close and not big enough - the casio's are great at long throw distances but marginal (just mind you) at my normal existing projector distances - I've done the math (well used the proj throw distance website :) ) and played with one at the recent conference.

Also, do you not have a plug socket in the ceiling to simply switch over power cables?

A lot of the time - no - power comes from extended mains lead from wall socket :(

And of course it would be illegal to cut the plug off the new lead and wire it to the existing wiring extension connector myself :(

And some of my celings in my old school are exceedingly high and would require scaffolding to get at the ceiling sockets!

I am fully aware of LED life and in practice it tends to be shorter, but i see no published HalfLife as with plasma and LED TVs.

My point is i am reserving judgement and as for quality they are not as sharp as most LCD projectors as mentiond above "after" my post "Wasn't blown away by the brightness/image quality" this is mentioned all over the forums you dont have to take my word for it?

So as i say i will "for now" reserve judgement.

As for changing to a DLP projector , not a good idea we see more DLP than anything LCD are much more reliable and longer lived by a long long way, the reliablility of DLP and coulours leave a lot to be desired.

Any of the new LCD are good value the Epson X8 very good price now with 5 year lamp, and on site cover, and lamp replacement on just over £100

Does anyone know if a (Casio) representative will come out and demonstrate them? Our LEA would be interested in seeing them in use. Or if any schools in West/East Sussex are using them?

We are using them - you'd have to trek across to south glos though...

Work well for us :)

No - I've decided that they won't give a large enough picture at "normal" .e.g Epson. throw distances and with the non-standard mains plug it means I can't replace existing projectors myself.

Since it costs me about £200 to have a projector mount/mains connection changed - there's not a great economic incentive to use them as replacement projectors.

You can get an adapter from maplins for under a fiver. C14 to C5 adapter should do the trick.

We have one here also and the image quality is far superior to any of the lamp types, we plan to replace as needed when they fail to the LED type. More expensive initially but if you deduct the lamps you would have to buy they are going to be cheaper long term. Only problem at the moment is they don't do a short throw, well they did not have short throw a few months ago but that may change soon.

Which models are people buying?

We bought a couple of the XJ-245's to try out the wireless but now will be getting the XJ-240's when we want more as the wireless is a non-starter as it seems you can't use the projectors wirelessly at the same time as being connected wirelessly to a normal wireless lan.

You learn something new everyday - I didn't know things like this existed! :)

(Cause I need 2 prong "cassette" plug to 3 prong "kettle" plug adapaters as well to save electricians coming in to sort out new style epsons as well :) )

We've stock piled a load of Casio XJ-A130s.

The cheapest one in the range.

They do 2000 lumens at a decent resolution with the usual controls.

Something else (apart from the 'clover leaf'/C5 type mains socket) is the composite input is a 3.5mm jack, rather than separate phono sockets.

So, we needed to buy more adapters to retro-fit them for DVD/video players (yup we still have VHS...)

They come with 3.5mm -> phono socket adapters though don't they? Ours certainly did. The only thing we needed was phono joiners.

@localzuk - 2 years on how are your Casio Projectors? I know @AlexPilot has stated in another thread they cant be faulted 2 years on.

Would be interested to know your experience.

Still going strong. We had a couple of faults, but they provided us with swap in replacements until they were fixed. We have about half a dozen of them here, and all staff love them.

Did you install them and forget about them or havwe you had to do any kind of maintenance/cleaning to them since install?

Ours are running fine, had 1 fail but was swapped next day...

I tend to clean them once a term as they do get a bit dusty, but seem to run fine even when covered.

They've been installed and forgotten.

I think they will be OK when the price comes down but at the moment there is no benifit over the cheaper Epson and simler projectors who now give you a free lamp, and as lamps last 5,000 hrs (five years) that is Ten years of lamps with a new Epson now compare that to the new reduced life of the Laser/LED bulbs that incedently ARE a replaceable unit (same as any other lamp) and there is no advantage of having a LED projector, they are nosier hotter and from what i have seen in my workshop not as reliable.

They will get there but as yet , its my opinion they are not quite ready yet.

From real-life use, I'd disagree entirely. I've *never* seen a normal projector lamp last 5000 hours. Ever. 2500? Sure. Having to swap lamps is not fun though. Its disruptive and annoying.

Can you let me know which suppliers I can get an Epson from with a spare lamp (giving me 10 years)? I would be very interested in this deal.

Wonder if that's 5000 hrs in "Eco mode" which I have never seen anyone use?

Totally agree with this ^^

I would but i cant advertise. But it is the normal Educational cover also if you buy several you are entitled to a free spare projector for warrenty cover on site to enable same day swapout.

The lamp life on Epsons is 5,000 hrs from the X11 onwards, yes if you obstruct the airflow you wont get that but i have had many projectors with close to that pre X11 so its not unusual, also if you incline the projector more than 20 degres out of horizontal you will shorten the lamplife.

Not what I have been told. I have made a few enquiries with some suppliers and the standard Education Warranty they offer is 3 year Projector and Bulb. No mention of 5 years or spare bulbs.

Can you pm me any details?

Marc you clearly have a great deal of experience of projectors and, from I've seen, you are far from being a fan of LED projectors, but you do seem to be in a significant minority on here.

Many of us have found them to be a million times better than the bulb projectors. The life, warranty and performance of LED Epsons and Casios has proved itself time and again in the classroom. It's so good to have something you can just switch on and off and only have to dust rather than clean filters, change the bulbs and watch the image fade and change colour as it ages.
