Film performance license query

We would like to some time in the future, create a film club in school to show DVD's to also raise funds for the school.

 

I am aware that we would need to be licensed to do so. Is there anyone on here who are running a film club at their school and could you tell me what type of license is required and the annual cost?

Depending on who represents the film publisher, you need an MPLC license or the correct PRS license.

 

Anecdotal evidence suggests it will cost you about £100 a time, but the licensing houses will give you a proper idea.

Thanks for the swift response powdarrmonkey, so we pay for a license to cover us initally and then a pay as you go (approx £100 per performance). The worrying thing is working out how many licensing houses there are representing all the film companies lol.

MPLS represent about 350 independents, and for the major Hollywood and other studios you need PVSL or STSL (sorry, I misread my chart). They have a single title screening license and online applications, and a wide catalogue: Welcome To Filmbank

Im not surprised they charge that but £100 per performance is scandalous to a school. I can understand charges if its a film club run as a business or something but would it be beyond them to provide a vastly discounted licence to schools and charitable organisations? Doesnt make it right but you can see why so many just dont bother with the licences.

 

And then the film industry want us to feel sorry for them losing a few quid over piracy...fat chance

lol dont worry I'm not taking it as gospel, but unless the actual figure turns out to be much lower then my rant stands

Lol - human nature dude we all want something for near to nowt , but in fairness if we can get 200 bums on seats for an inclusive price which includes a fish and chip dinner from our local takeaway to make a few bob towards the school then its worth the effort. We're aim to target children saturday matinees and film shows for the elderly who can't travel the 5 miles to the nearest multiplex and then get consume half their pension for a hot dog

With regards to the PRS licence - if your school does not have a PRS licence when signing up they will purchase one for you on your behalf - also free of charge I believe.
