We've recently had a new SAN put in, and a whole bunch of virtual servers now reside on our network. As Capita are apparently reluctant to support SIMS running on a virtual server we have kept the old SIMS server as is, but the server was renamed in line with the new naming scheme (we differentiate between virtual or physical servers with "vs" or "ps" in the name).

So, the server was renamed and joined to the new domain. SIMS works fine but our backups aren't running properly. Most of the backup exec services haven't started and won't start manually either.

We've been speculating as to what might cause this, just in case there's an expert here who knows for sure, would our renaming of the server effect backup exec or are we barking up the wrong tree?

You renamed a machine with the backup exec agent on it? You certainly wouldn't want to rename one with the *Media server* on it!

sorry to be sarcastic but backup exec gets grumpy if the wind changes direction - the amount of money i have spent on the junk over the years with agent licences etc.

Well it looks like we did, how's about that? :D

How might we fix this do ya think?

Not so - please email me if you have advice that suggests this.

The decision was made on the basis of advice given to us by someone at Capita, who (in summary) said we could do it but it was more trouble than it was worth (so not a blanket "no you can't" but still a reluctance to support it). Also, a techie from another local school said he was "told off" for virtualising his SIMS server and this put us off too. Later on in the game the company that set up our SAN for us were told by someone else at Capita that we could do it, but it was a bit late by then.

But I don't see that it really matters now, we took the advice we were given and stuck to using our existing SIMS server - which to be fair is not that old anyway.
