Hi,

My wife has potentially got a new job based in Nottingham city, which if she takes it will mean relocating there. Can anyone recommend any nice areas within 30-40 minutes drive? We are going down for a scout round on Monday, looking for rural areas with fairly nice countryside close by if any of that sort of area exists, really don't know the area at all.

I dont know the area well, but I have friends who live in Farnsfield and the area around there, and Southwell and the surrounding villages are lovely

Woodthorpe is pretty nice although not that rural. Nottingham in is a big place and rush hour traffic in some areas can be bad, much worse than you might expect. What can take 5 minutes any other time can take 30mins or more at rush hour. Southwell is a nice rural area but what would be a 40min trip normally and I bet could turn into 1 hour 30min at rush hour. (That’s a guess never timed it)

I can get to Mansfield from Nottingham in 40mins. But I bet the same trip from Mansfield to Nottingham in the morning would be much, much longer.

If you can, do some test drives during rush hour. I often drive out of Nottingham seeing long tailbacks of stationary or slow moving traffic trying to get in.

Thanks, will look at those areas, although looking on propertyfinder Farnsfield and Southwell may be slightly out of our league, but we'll see how it goes.

Yeah, will weigh up the rush hours thing, very good point that.

It's a big decision to make, it's a dream job for the mrs, but it's a big upheaval moving away from family and friends so we've got some serious thinking to do. It's also going to mean living apart during the week until we can sell the house, move and I can find another job down that way.

I actually live in Derbyshire, but halfway between Nottingham and Derby in a place called West Hallam which is lovely and pretty quiet. I don't know if it would be too far out for Nottingham though being that I never go to Nottingham. Its fairly easy to get to one of the park and ride tram stations (phoenix park) though I believe.
