tech_guy Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 (edited) Just a heads up for all us UK Android owners - today Google Maps Navigation comes to the UK and Ireland, and will be available as part of Google Maps on any phone running Android 1.6 and later! Whoop! Just been playing with it on my G1 and it is so cool. Edited April 21, 2010 by tech_guy
LosOjos Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Awesome, so glad I decided on the HTC Desire in the end
tech_guy Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 I've got 1.6 on my G1 so I just scrape in! Can't wait until I get my Desire in June.
webman Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Is this an update or a new app? How do you get it?
tech_guy Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 It's part of Google Maps - get the latest version from the MarketPlace.
fafster Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 It's an update for the existing Maps app. You'll either get a notification that an update is available, or if you're impatient you can go into the Market and download it.
ChrisH Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 I am wondering how much data allowance this kind of thing would use if you used it all the time....
tech_guy Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 I know, I was thinking that - plus, in the half hour I've been playing with it it's sucked my battery a bit.
webman Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Got it. Just didn't see the option for Navigate. Thanks
LosOjos Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 I know, I was thinking that - plus, in the half hour I've been playing with it it's sucked my battery a bit. At least if it's being used in the car you can plug in to the lighter socket though (I presume that one exists for the HTC phones?)
tech_guy Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 Yeah, I've got one. Never had a need to use it before but now I have!
tech_guy Posted April 26, 2010 Author Posted April 26, 2010 I've used the Google Maps Navigator on my G1 on a few trips now and it is amazing. Using the satellite imagery layer is very useful - it's a much better user experience and more interesting than the boring old cartoony type graphics on traditional sat navs. I also particularly like the way it automatically zooms in at junctions to show you a close-up so you know what to expect - very handy at confusing roundabouts, etc. The only niggle is that the maximum volume setting on the G1 still isn't quite loud enough and the female voice is a bit robotic, and places a strange emphasis on certain words; "streeeet", for example!
Theblacksheep Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 got bored of waiting on HTC to update the hero from 1.5 Now rooted with 2.1, sense ui and all the goodies that go with it, inc google nav
alan-d Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 Hijacking an old thread Got my HTC Desire yesterday Anyone used compass mode when in Google street view yet? If not try it That is one cool app When you have it on, hold the phone up and turn 360 degrees Amazing!
SimpleSi Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 Haven't tried that one yet - but get Google Sky Map - worth the price of admission alone Si
alan-d Posted May 23, 2010 Posted May 23, 2010 (edited) Only just moved to a smart phone - like a kid with the newest best toy ever Done lots of research and reading so knew a lot of what it can do but seeing it is another dimension edit* - Just installed Skymap *Dribbles* Edited May 23, 2010 by alan-d
Fatmas Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 Just installed Skymap *Dribbles* We were sat in the garden last night and I installed skymap. It's amazing, will be playing with it a lot I think.
