Double standards removing the word **** from posts?

I am sure I am not the only one who has been pulled up recently on using the word crap within a post. The last time I did I was told that this site has a strict language policy and that using such terms as crap would block the site from filters and would not be tolerated.

 

Now a quick search of the site shows a large number of older posts still with the word, about 500+ and today there are a number of posts with the word crap in them. One such thread has posts from a mod. Why is it one comes down like a ton of bricks within minutes of a post whilst other do nothing? Maybe I was right in my first assumption that the reason my post was censored is that I am not liked so an easy target.

 

Just wondered if anyone else has had similar issues?

My guess would be because Mods can't be everywhere all the time... There are not a huge number of them, and they can't sit around checking every post all the time.

 

Would this not have been more suited to PM to an admin, or use the admin forum to get an answer, rather than starting what is effectively a 'CENSORSHIP!!!' thread?

Agreed, if this site gets blocked on the proxy ill have to start doing work!! and im not prepared to do that so stop the potty mouth

I have no issue with not being able to use the word and I agree they cannot be everywhere at once. However if they see fit to edit my post within minutes but leave others that is double standards.

Bad timing maybe? if a mod is online its much easyier to spot than having to search back post and bringing up old topics

True but one of the threads today has replies from a mod. So they read the posts and have time to reply but not edit.

 

Also, you seem to be implying that this site follows some strict rule-set, when it doesn't. The mods aren't given some crib sheet to follow as far as I'm aware...

Actually we're just discussing our language policy at the minute, with regard to this very word, which is why things aren't being actively jumped on as fast.

Wow ... so, because you have a history of stirring things you think that *your* posts might get read a lot more carefully than others to see if you are intentionally provoking an arguement?

 

Go figure.

 

I've an idea ... perhaps if a mod is responding to a thread that mod in particular might be trying to respond to a thread as a *member* ... mods are members too.

 

Then again ... if you spot unsuitable language in a thread you could always use the report facility to raise the awareness of it to the mods.

 

Oh yes ... mustn't forget ... I too am being a :troll:

Well I was told there is a no swearing policy, and seeing as the word was edited out of my post it must come under that policy. Also if there is a no swearing policy then the mods must have a copy to work from?

To be honest ... a mod has now come in ... has said they are talking about this ... so I think it would be sensible to leave this as an open thread (with no more provocative posts!)

 

I can say this thanks to the comfy cushion provided by RingOfFlame allowing me to sit on the fence.

Again, you seem to think of this site as having some form of formal policy documentation - why? There isn't some board which sits down and writes 10,000 page policies in legalese. Sure, a no swearing policy may exist, but every mod is an individual (volunteer) member of the site. They mod the site out of the goodness of their own hearts, they don't go on some training course etc...

 

You seem to be approaching this site from completely the wrong angle.

No not the wrong angle, just a different angle from you. Your opinion is that different mods can choose to interpret language in different ways, even if said language is part of a policy the site has, effectively using the policy as a guide lines they do not have to use. I however see a policy as something that should be adhered to.

Which is why you're coming from it from the wrong angle... Consider this - you've been here for quite a short time, and in that time, you've been given various warnings/had posts edited/been given a lot of negative rep. Does that not indicate to you that you are going about things in slightly the wrong way? Generally, if I am warned about something I've done, or find myself being given a ticking off by a large chunk of the community (ie. neg rep) then I'll think 'I may be wrong here...' and change the way I operate. Do you?
