Quota limits, what do you recommend?

I've only today discovered the awesome that is, File Server Resource Manager.

 

I've been looking at different limits for different year groups shares but I feel it's not granular enough!

 

I've noticed that some pupils in different year groups have massive areas because there doing photography or video.

 

Could I impose a limit (say 500Mb) to a certain folder (say my year 9's user areas \\server\09$) but then increase that limit for a particular security group (i'd make one called photoclub) then stick those users within it.

 

is there away of shrinking .psd files and mass recompressing .jpgs?

 

How do you sort yours?

i was looking at ours recently as the it hod was moaning, i think what you have would keep him happy, i see no need. i would have to massivly increase file server size and increase backup system

My quota system is inherantly flawed in that if every student used their quota, there wouldn't be enough space, but in reality this doesn't happen.

 

We have 450 students, and a 1TB of storage allocated between them. Most students are fairly sensible with their file storage, the quotas are only there to stop those that aren't, and shouldn't impact on the students ability to use the machines effectively - if it did we would review it immediatly.

All hard limits. Biggest problem with them was kids getting their RECYCLER folders filling up - they were deleting stuff as they should but it wasn't actually clearing the space for them. We're now using AngryTechnician's Recycle Bin Script to empty out old items to mitigate that problem.

 

Gonna start setting up soft quotas for staff today as the drive holding their home directories has 4Gb left...!

I would be looking at available options to expand that storage in that situation, as well as introducing a quota system. I would say in this day and age an average of less than 1GB per student is not really enough.

 

Of course if you've no available funds to expand the storage, then you just gotta make do the best you can with what you've got.

We have a soft quota and work on the principle that if it's relevant schoolwork, then the storage is there for you to use.

 

I'd warn against resizing jpegs in student homedirs - a) you're modifying user data (which is IME a big "don't do that" for sysadmins and b) you don't know which of those ridiculously high res photos they'll want to print out poster-sized for coursework.

 

If someone's talking the michael storage-wise, we send them an email asking them to have a clearout by $date. If they don't respond, we send the request via the form tutor.

I run VMware here so I can expand the volume if I need. The problem at the moment is that the data is so large the backup window is now 50 hours. (VMWare4 over ethernet sucks)

No quota's - zip - ziltch - de nadda - nothing. Got rid of them all 5 minutes after starting. Solved two big network problems with just a couple of mouse clicks. 1) users queing at the door want more space, 2) 90% of available hdd space unused.

 

Also stopped deleting kids work at the end of every school year . Buying a new ?Tb NAS box in the summer to give more space.

Currently - 4Tb NAS on site for file backups and 4Tb portable NAS taken off-site for VM images. Most backups are incremental so don't require that much space. Will review our back-up/DR plans as the need a rises.

I have come to the conclusion that the more you give students and staff the more they will fill it full of rubbish (@synack do you see how I have used the word rubbish instead of the word C**p) so we just give them the following quotas and ask the staff to request more disk space if required for both themselves and students.

 

7 30mb

8 50mb

9 60mb

10 80mb

11 100mb

 

Staff 100mb plus VLE shared resource area for their teaching and learning.

 

So far it has worked like a dream.

 

We have just over 6.3Tb of data space that we can use but I feel we will progress into this over time as the requirements grow.

Our media studies and photography students in Y10 & Y11 get 2gb, everyone else 500mb. If they all filled their quota we would come very close to running out & backups could take forever......

OK I've made some new template but I'm stuck at the point of applying them.

 

I've two choices:

 

Create quota on Path ~or~ Auto apply template and create quotas on existing and new subfolders.

 

I don't get it.

 

So my share structure is E:\yeargroupnumber$\pupilsshare\

 

If I create a quota on path E:\yeargroupnumber$* Then surely an existing pupil won't be able go over the quota limit.

 

So why would I want the auto quota? I've read it's description and I don't see why I'd need to set the quota on each and every folder and subfolder by every student that will ever made?

 

Could someone give me two scenarios for each quota type as I didn't get the roaming profiles example given in the help.
