Recommend PDAs and wireless gear

I know this has been discussed - just asking for an update...

 

I need 3 PDAs for PE Staff to register to SIMS Lesson Monitor/ Take Register. Apparently the new s/w isn't out yet, and the old one is no more.

Minimum specification for PDA’s

 

We recommend pocket PC 2003 or above, with 64mb Internal Memory (128mb recommended)

 

PDA

400 MHz Intel xscale processor (or equivalent) or above.

240x320 minimum screen resolution in portrait mode.

128mb Memory card for Data back up.

 

Wireless gear

 

3 Access points - 2 external with booster antennae, and one internal.

Our PE staff have 3 PDA's in their dept. Each one syncs pars data with the teachers laptop, all they have to do is download the day data from pars wirelessly and upload it at the end of the day.

 

I will hopefully be setting up some sort of wireless mast to beam the wireless signal to our all weather pitch in the future.

 

The PDA's we use are HP Ipaq 2400 series with built-in wif fi.

Ive just got 3 iPAQ hx2490's and they seem pretty good, but would be better if I could customise the UI a bit more, ie. put a link to IE on the front screen.

 

We are using recovered Buffalo AirStations to supply the wireless link.

 

Should all be installed next week so fingers crossed.

We used to have a few wireless bridges to connect the remote cabins.

 

These have been replaced with fibre, as such the APs were rendered useless, so were recovered for this job.

Capita mentioned some HPs for £175 that met the minimum requirements - they couldn't find it again.

 

They mentioned that the specs would be upped once the new mobile assessment etc apps were added - but who the hell would want to do assessments on a PDA.

HP 420's go for about £205

 

Zyxel had some listed which were just as good for about 2 thirds of the cost of the HP.
