Can anyone help with this problem

 

have a booklet we are printing

 

want page numbers to start on page 3 so not on cover or contents page

 

so the third page will say 1 at the bottom then 2 ,3,4 .........

 

cant work out how though

 

can do it by starting at 0 but this makes contents page page 1

Funnily enough I've just done a talk on this for final year undergrads who have to do this on their dissertations!

 

The trick is that you need a Section Break everywhere the page numbering scheme changes, so your page 3 needs to be preceeded by a "Section Break - Next Page", which you'll get from the Page Layout tab on Word 2007. (Insert menu if you're in 2003).

 

Then, go to Insert > Footer and on p1, delete any page numbers that are there. Scroll down to p3, and in the footer turn off the "link to previous" which you'll find on the ribbon. Then insert your page number, select it and go to the "Format Page Numbers" option which is on the pulldown you get from the "Insert Page Number" button.

 

Now you can set it to start at 1.

 

If you've got any other section breaks in the booklet, perhaps to change orientation, you'll need to check the footer either side of them as it's likely to be wrong.

Stick a white box over the pege footer on page 1 and 2, then no issues!

That'd just result in the page 1 being page 3 though.
