Energy Meters - ICT questions

How many of you have had someone ask questions for this Energy Meter which is free for Schools (Free Energy Display Meter for schools)

 

One question amoungst many is:

 

Is there a spare IT network (LAN) socket within two metres of the electrical distribution board (and within the same room)?

 

Why would we put a network point in the plant room?

Quite a lot of modern 'building management systems' talk over the ICT network, so it's certainly not that un-common to have networking in plantrooms these days. However for a lot of older buildings of course they don't have such systems so you're going to have to get it put in I guess. I'd just run some cat 5 above the ceiling to the nearest cabinet, no need for a terribly neat installation if it's only in a cupboard.

I liked the question. Will the network socket have connectivity to the rest of the network.

Err no we decided to just install blank network sockets on walls not connected to anything.

 

EDIT:

Will someone be present during installation to give usernames and passwords? How would I know you have yet to tell us when you are doing the install.

Will the display meter be able to operate at 10/100. Is that even a needed questions anymore? Does anyone even run a network below 10.

 

Are the questions really badly thought out or am I missing somethingl

Had a query come in today about these needing a fresh port opening on the firewall. Did anyone bother to think how RBCs are setup before doing this?

Can antivirus or firewalls installed on the PC be configured to allow internet Explorer 6 to run.

Oh dear, but it just so happens I did put in the summer a double data point in my mains switch room, one for the phone system and a spare for those you never know situations (I was thinking my laptop or something for when using the phone system) so thats a good start

As we're on a big energy efficiency drive at the moment I got all excited at the thought of getting one of these, especially as we have comms cabs in the plant rooms with plenty of ports spare! Then I discovered it's only for England....................
