Unanswered posts

When I used to frequent the Ubuntuforums, one of the most useful links they had on there was a link to 'unanswered posts'. This meant that those posts that sat without anyone noticing them would be easy to find and post answers to.

 

Could this be introduced here?

I was thinking of the old Googlewhack paradox. As soon as you post that you've found one it's no longer a Googlewhack.

Whilst this is a good idea I also advocate removing General Chat posts from the main page so that less technical posts remain unanswered in the first place.

Agreed! I get involved in the general chat sometimes (not so much anymore) but some days (Friday in particular funnily enough) it's hard to get a technical question answered at all, and it's off to backwoods of 'New Posts' by Monday, never to be seen again...

You can easily find all unanswered post using the search function, I do it often and post replies to anything I can.

I have thought about it but I have not found an ideal solution yet.

Like others have said, you dont want a huge wash of unanswered posts but likewise it would be useful.

I just went to see how they handled it at ubuntuforums but have they pulled the feature?

It does indeed look like they have pulled it. I've not been on there in a while - not been using Ubuntu much.

I would have thought you would have to implement an expiration date on unanswered posts or at least the facility to lock down unanswered posts and archive after a set amount of time has passed?

I am toying with hacking a mod to tweak this approach slightly. More details to come in the coming weeks

Maybe unanswered posts could be automatically locked or marked as 'dead' after a certain amount of time, then the 'Unanswered Posts' Page could have the option of whether or not to show locked/'dead' posts

I was going to wait a couple of days before posting about this (to avoid a ranting braindump) but I see I've been beaten to it

 

There are some good ideas and I support them fully. However, with my social-not-technical-problem hat on, it would also be nice to see some self-restraint WRT frivolous posts/threads - that's not to say don't post it, but consider its value before doing so.
