I've just done the same for our "Shared Area" for exactly the same reasons. I've turned Windows Auditing on - but found it a real drag looking at the stuff it produced - I found this after extensive Googling

And recommend it to you - it makes delving through the logs a breeze, and I wrote a little script to archive the log and csv it produced with the date each day, so it doesn't get over big.

 

Have to say though - just telling the staff that I was now auditing who did what was enough to eliminate 99% of the problems

SCL: How do you enable user tracking - (on 2k server)?

Not sure about 2k server, we are 2003 server so I followed the instructions on the site for 2003. Not sure if they're similar to 2k or not though

On 2K clicking 'explore' or 'test' just brings up the drive properties. I don't seem to be able to add a path like it shows on the diagram. I've set permissions on the local policy - i'll see what happens.

Isn't there a peformance hit. Surely there's a reason why file access logging isn't turned on by default.

If your worried about this try and put the logs on a different disk set.

Havent noticed any performance hit as yet, our servers are a high spec, but even so everything ran smoothly all day.

They do say the s/w has a low performance hit in the specs. Depends how much auditing you turn on to go with it.
