Server 2000 to Server 2008

Hi all

 

Just wanted to know how involved a move from Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2008 Server is.

 

From what I have read there are tools available from Microsoft that help migrate shared folders etc, but are there any tools that migrate the users across, I don’t fancy recreating over 500+ users again.

depends how you so it if its the same domain then user objects will still be there though their user areas will be pointed at old location (depending how its set up can be easy to change so if its \\server\users$\staff\daftteacher then you can just select all staff users and change to \\newserver\users$\%username% and as long as you have a users$ and set permissions right it will create all areas for you you just then need to move data accross though this will give staff full permission to their own user space). There are tools for moving users from one domain to another but ive never used them only time ive started a new domain recently was when both servers decided neither was a gc and i got fed up of repairing it for it to croak 2 days later

so you would need a 2003 box to go to 2008 might be worth doing a new domain at that point then

First thing I saw was this: A direct upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2008 R2 is not supported which I was unaware of, but in theory you should be able to do 2000 > 2008. Updating the schema and migrating server roles is very similar to 2003 Server.

 

I wouldn't recommend a direct upgrade from 2000 to 2008 as there are quite a few differences (as you can imagine).

might be worth doing a backup of the 2k box and trying an upgrade to 2003 in situ not ideal but as its only a stop gap should be ok then adprep that so it can talk to the 2008 r2 box

thanks all for the replies. yes we will have to go from 2000 to 2003 and then from 2003 to 2008. the current 2000 server is fully backed up and imaged with acronis. the pain is that the school don't want to buy another server to replace the current one, they only want to upgrade the OS, I'm more concerned about if the drivers will cause any problems, I'm hoping that a software upgrade will be pretty straight forward, if it all goes pear shaped i can always go back to a backup image by using acronis.

 

p.s I have seen hardware independant imaging software from acronis, might give that a go also, if the school do in the end decide to by a new server.

if its going onto the same box id be tempted to back up all data to an external source setup a workstation as a 2003dc then remove the 2000 dc up the domain to 2003 level then install 2008 fresh on the server

So many ways of doing it, but knowing my luck no matter which method I choose, its more than likely gonna go tits up
