Quite a few edugeekers have them for NAS storage, virtualisation, filestore, etc. start at 2TB RAW and go up to (soon) 3.1PB RAW. Thanks The 439 uses an Atom running at 1.6Ghz with a Gig of ram, it also provides disk encryption should you want it. The 419 uses a Marvell at 1.2Ghz and 512MB of ram and has two eSATA ports. The SP is a single power supply, while the RP has redundant (two) power supplies. You also haven't mentioned what you'll be using it for, how much data you need to store now and in (say) 2 years time. That'll affect what we recommend.

But i could then up the drive space couldnt I if i needed. not many clients reading and writing data all at once. So medium to light load. thanks

It's going to be sent off for repair, but despite that - I'd say it's not bad. high storage capacity with that ability to use mismatched disks and thin storage. Apparently it does de-duplication too. The only problem is the speed. It isn't going to be comparable to something like the SUN boxes. We use it for our backup store. Tried running a virtual machine on it, which worked - just a bit slow. We have a drobo-pro. The elite model might be a bit faster.
diggory Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 Update on our drobo-pro. It seems to hang after running for a few weeks in iSCSI mode. We've had it running with the latest firmware and had sent it back for one repair (but now the warranty has expired - sigh). I had thought it wasn't coping with the large 2Tb partitions we were using for vm-ware, but it is now certified for vm-ware and we followed their suggestions on setting it up for vm-ware. I might try using it for non-critical stuff. It is recommended to fill it with disks to increase the speed, but it doesn't help us too much. Also tried using port 3261 instead of 3260. We are running one vm server on it (which is running MS DPM) using ESXi I'm going to migrate that to an openfiler SAN instead I think... 2
maark Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 using the qnap mentioned as storage for clickview video library with no problems so far - setup on raid 5. Also using a similar qnap for backup storage for backup exec with no issues. 1
