e_g_r Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 OK i know this one has probably been done to death and yes i could have done a search of the site for the answer but i'd like a fresh view on this. Basicaly got an email from out head of ICT saying that our 6th formers are going to fail there course if they can't access pen drives (apparently its a part of the course that they use them - they have to show evidence of backing upto removable media) Now i've had to restrict pen drives and other media because we got confikered and even through we are patched up and upto date i don't ever want to go through that kind of experience again. We still get pendrives coming in to be scanned that have the bloody thing on them. Are there any of you guys who DO NOT allow removable media who have alternatives for courses that imply that pupils need to use them?
p858snake Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 Ask to look at the course work to see what it actually says? Do your machines still have a floppy drive? just buy a pack of 30 or so disks and use them.... 1
sippo Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 We allow use of pen drives but disable autorun. We try and get pupils to regularly come to us to scan their pens, but staff don't seem to accept that these pens need scanning. Its annoying really. I can see if we disabled use altogether we'd be hounded! 1
dwhyte85 Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 We are in the same position as Sippo... we have to allow it, disable autorun & scan as much as we can. Have been given authority to remove but it's one of those changes where the VLE has to be up to scratch to do this change, staff feedback suggests it isn't and therefore not an option at the moment. Of course, it assumes everyone has a net connection at home. By the way, instead of USB keys... the VI formers were given a laptop each! 1
mullet_man Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 You could provide them with an old laptop or PC which they can use to do the course work, something which is not attached to the network etc. 1

cookie_monster Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 (edited) We allow the use of pendrives. The best way to be safe is dissable autoruns and then use a software restriction policy whitelist. This has the benefit of killing exe games as well as not allowing things like confiker to run. I can post more details if you like, you can test a software restriction policy and roll it out during term as you can apply it to a small group of users to start. Take a look at this thread i posted more details at the end. http://www.edugeek.net/forums/how-do-you-do/11315-help-write-guide-software-restriction-policies-usb.html Edited February 24, 2010 by cookie_monster
Guest Guest Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 Was going to do this for the GCSE but its the 6th form bit thats the problem What difference does that make? Besides, cant they do the screenshot at home? It will only take them all of 10 seconds.
p858snake Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 Did think of this as a retro solution 1. boxes of disks are cheap these days 2. Easy to get class sets since cheap 3. brand new boxes means they are clean of viruses 4. Doesn't matter if they get damaged
cookie_monster Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 The only floppy drives on our network are in PC's 4+ years old and as always they're full of gum.

We get kids come in with confiker on their sticks but it won't execute and spread.
alunmjones Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 we allow pen drives, the AV is set to scan any file beeing accessed, and group policy blocks certain file types, exe, ini, inf ect from running, autorun is disabled aswell. works well at the moment, everyone is happy, and no viruses so far
FN-GM Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 We dont allow them (Balderstone Technology College, Rochdale) Students are not allowed to use them at all. Any work they want to take home they do through the portal. Staff pendrives are allowed after we scan them
