I HATE REDSTONE !!!!!

 

They used to be OK with the usual few glitches which you can handle dealing with, however, not sure what's happened recently but they have obviously changed their policies and they're a nightmare to deal with. has anyone else had experiences like this?

 

Anyway, my real question is, who would you recommend as a good supplier? I don't really want to bring the filtering in-house at this stage so preferrably one that can offer a filtering service too?

You could always fork out £8,000 for a Bloxx 3 year subscription. Or, get yourself a mid-spec standard PC and install IPCop + Advproxy + URLFilter addons at no extra cost - it's really not that difficult.

as webman stated, hosting your own proxy filter isn't that difficult.

Smoothwall offer a good corporate and school solution with a nice web interface. I'd guess they'd even put you in touch with someone to set it up and maintain it - for a price, and you'd be certain that its a better system and cheaper.

 

If anyone does have any other suggestions of external suppliers I'd like to hear. We had RM and their proxy's suck too.

Has anyone moved away from their LEA's who provide their internet and gone to somone else such as telewest.

I'd totally recommend doing it yourself... but if not then try Easynet - Decent reliable DSL and they do filtering... but I have no idea what it's like as I use my own...

BTW Agree about Redstone - we have a phone system from them

As organised by the LEA and before I got here we're with Telewest but go through another company, Synetrix, who do the filtering.

For the past year there has been constant problems with the Synetrix part of the connection, but as I don't have any say where we go or anything, it's how it carries on.

Ranj, Speak to Ashok, he has moved away from the LEA broadband con... and moved over to NTL....

 

He will be able to advise you if you are looking to move away from your LEA..

For the past year there has been constant problems with the Synetrix part of the connection, but as I don't have any say where we go or anything, it's how it carries on.

 

Got telewest at home and it's rock solid and fast. So I'd agree about Synetrix.

Thanks all, i might look into running my own proxy, I guess I'd just get a BT line and broadband in to the school to work this?

Yes, but be aware you'll have to buy a 'business' package rather than a 'home user' one. The main difference being the price.
