Do you allow students to access their home directory files (Download and Upload) from home ?

If so, what do you use to do it?

Thanks,

Not exactly. Our LEA block that level of access. We can buy into a web based system called 'Neoteris' (used at my previous school) which would give pupils an interface to their network shares.

To be honest though I don't think it's needed. We are actively advocating the use of the VLE as a document store so this gets around this problem completely. Files stored on the VLE can be accessed and edited from anywhere - home, school, whatever.

Around September we'll also be moving to Gmail which include Google Docs and more online storage space. I see this as the final nail in the USB pen sticks coffin.

Personally I would want to push using our VLE for this kind of stuff.

But our Head has asked for some way for the kinds to access all their work.

However, it would need to be web based access.

I had a quick look at WebDAV, but unless I was being blind and stupid (high possibility), I couldn't see anyway of importing 100's of users.

We're looking into the SMB Share Client for Moodle. Students need an online storage area, but our thinking is why should it be in a different location to their current documents? Same location means one location to worry about backing up, and all work is accessible from anywhere.

If you have sharepoint you can buy a web part for one off payment of £500 from SalamanderSoft Limited - this will allow users to access their home folders if you have external access to your sharepoint site.

Got this working ok here - you can also buy one for access to shared documents.

I use a SonicWall VPN (about £1400)

It has either a web interface or a VPN Client interface (for staff laptops), can support up to 200 users and you can remotely access machines through the web interface if you want.

Most things work over the VPN Client - even software deployment! (with the exception of SIMS).

Usernames/Logins are hooked into AD.

We don't have sharepoint here, so wouldn't be able to do that.

I had a look at the Moodle SMB Share, but it didn't seem to want to connect to their homes. Might have another look at it when I get a minute. Let me know if you have any success with it.

Also going to take a look at Remote Access Solution - Homepage

If using MS software remember that you may need a CAL or external connector of some description to access one or more servers on your network. This is mostly relevant if you have device based licenses.

With the latest version of the SMB Block you can access other shares.
