I've just contacted them about network installer versions of this software.

 

Maybe we all should do that and then they may provide...

The "Instant Favourites" are just .url files in the user's Favorites folder. You can copy these into place using a script or Group Policy Preferences. Same should apply to the CEOP button, whicn is just a special .url file in the user's Favorites\Links folder, though I'm still working on how to get it to activate automatically as simply copying this file into place requires the user to click 'Subscribe' the first time the use it.

 

The search provider is tricky too, but I've already written an MSI you can deploy via GPO that installs the appropriate registry settings into the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and populates a policy setting to allow you to turn it on. Microsoft normally recommend you write your own ADM template for this, but frankly, that's a pain in the posterior. Use the MSI and all you then have to do is enable the following already-existing GP setting:

 

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Add a specific list of search providers to the user’s search provider list

 

As usual, use at your own risk YMMV, but it works for me.

Unfortunately some of us are still stuck on IE7 thanks to ePortal compatibility... :(

 

Sorry to hijack a bit but have you actually got problems with ePortal? We were told that it just wasn't tested on IE8 - the tech team haven't actually heard of anything that doesn't work properly...

In all fairness, no - I have IE8 on my machine here and it always seems fine, but then the only reason I ever log in to ePortal is to check it works every morning, so I'm unlikely to find anything that would break. From speaking to a Serco engineer, they won't support IE8 while they still have to support IE6 due to the enormous differences in the way they implement standards (or not, in the case of the former).

 

I just know that if ever anything broke in ePortal, IE8 would likely be blamed and we'd get no support until we downgraded again :/

I'd like to think it would work and satisfy Serco (depends on the engineer you get for support, I guess) - is there a GPO to force this though? Having just had to explain tabbed browsing to staff I think Compatibility View may be a step too far :rolleyes:

RM also don't officially support IE8 yet AFAIK, as it's still in 'Field Trial' on both CC3 and CC4. I haven't dared update in case it breaks the web-based management console, as I can't be bothered having a fight with RM about why it that shouldn't even be possible.

 

The search provider works in IE7, however, albeit without search suggestions.

Compatibility View is in fact enabled by default for anything in the Local Intranet zone, so you should be OK assuming Serco is hosted onsite (I've never used it so don't know).

Just had a circular from Serco... for the release of 10.1 on Monday April 26, they've announced that

Facility ePortal v10.1 will support Internet Explorer 8.

We've been using IE8 and ePortal together since September 09 and so far haven't encountered any issues....

 

(Now crossing all fingers and toes to keep it that way)

I've been using the combination on my machine here and at my last school for about 9 months and never seen anything, but then I never have to actually use ePortal - I've always held back just in case there's something I've not seen before. Now they officially support it, though, I can roll out IE8 (will try for the child-friendly version) and know that Serco support can't blame that for any problems we might be having :D

Thank you for the enquiry. Microsoft are currently developing a solution

that will allow the browser to be deployed to multiple machines. This

should be available in the near future. As soon as I have further

details I will let you know.
