Evening all,

After todays faculty meeting it looks like a shall be holding mini IT training session for the staff. Some of our staff lack a lot of basics when using computers, so i thought i could follow the ECDL course with them.

Can anyone recommend a decent book that would help me?

Morning,

I am just awaiting an email back with some more materials, but if i was you i would use Teach ICT to teach them the basics, i know teachers use it when teaching students and i guess that's nearly the same level staff would be at so :)

Teach ICT - European Computer Driving Licence Module ICT Revision Guide Certification, Theory Office 2003 and Windows XP. < ECDL on Teach ICT

Hope that helps,

James.

A couple of people at our place who do 'office' training get paid at a teachers rate for the time they train.....dunno if that is something standard across schools or specific to our place *shrug*.

No idea how it works out really but thought i'd mention it as it may be something you could look into? :)

Ask staff to list down anything that they want to do but are not sure how. If you got all staff to list 1 thing, you would probably end up with quite a lot of work(or similar requests). Then you can show them exactly what they would like to know and you're more likely to have people show up & pay attention.

Remember people are always limited for the time they have (and are willing to spend on training for something they dont really want to know about) so providing training & and helpsheets for specific tasks can be more useful.

Of course the problem is when they don't know what they need to know! Or they don't beleive that they need to know anything about a certain product.

Someone told me "Why should I learn how to use Excel I don't need use it". Right after I gave them a spreadsheet of figures they asked for (which I might not have sorted and totaled just to make apoint :evil_twisted:) and right before the budget request forms came out (which our accountant sends out as excel spreadsheets - Guess who's didn't come back in excel..)

Are they going to be compelled to go to the training? I only ask because we asked what was needed, got a few answers, set up a session and one person turned up!!

Yeah, thats the problem really. And it's so much more annoying after they have told you what they want but still dont want to help themself. I try and only offer 1 to 1 training now. That way you can offer 5-10 mins of training for a specific task and if they dont turn up you haven't wasted too much time.

Most of our training sessions are don during Staff Training days but I have been informed that training sessions were offered/held in the past with little uptake.
