Sometimes technology is great!

 

Got shown it by an Iphone Fanboy ICTCo-ord in my wife's school today - it even streams OK over 3G

 

Need to sign up and its got "interactive" adverts but hey -its free

We use it to display TV on the plasmas in school... don't always get adverts... in fact these days I rarely see one at all when we connect. It used to be better tho - used to offer timeslip recording etc but they had to remove the service for legal reasons.

 

They're bringing out an iPhone app soon, which will feature more channels... Web users get FAR more than iPhone users at the moment.

I imagine that if you asked they TV companies/ programme rights holders - they'd say no

 

But since these are all free to air services and all they are doing is re-broadcasting them ....

Not really... you'd be surprised how little it actually uses. And yes, it's 100% legal. They've been operating for several years now.

Tip: when changing channel and presented with a terrible renault advert, or some other timebomb - just hit F5 and it will refresh and just load the correct stream.

Well its seems their lawyers certainly think its legal

 

But I'd suspect that each stream would be on the order of 1Mb/sec unless there much cleverer than my ex-colleagues

 

Or it'll be PP quality

Last night on colleagues IPhone - it looked quite smooth and very impressive over 3G

 

Today at school on a 10MBs/sec link its looks like its coming in at 8fps

 

So maybe it doesn't use much bandwidth after all

The video doesn't seem to work through the SWGFL (RM) isp.

 

I connected using the iphone at home last night and the website said "Congratulations your ISP Etranet is compatible" so does this service rely on ISP participation if so is it using some multicast technology?

Last time I monitored it, it was using less than 100Kb/s to stream BBC... which is more or less same streaming rate I get when I do our own vids for streaming. So yes, your ex-colleagues obv aren't aware of how to compress for streaming properly. (1Mb/s for a video stream is comparatively ridiculous - anything more than 500Kb/s is ridiculous to be honest, unless you're streaming in HD)

 

No, it generally won't work thru LEA connections as their filtering blocks it. We use our backdoor ADSL line.

Thats quite weird reading this post whilst watching E4 on it (on my iphone).... never seen an advert yet!

 

Its great, quality streaming picture too.
