KidBASIC is an easy to use version of BASIC designed to teach young children the basics of computer programming. It uses traditional control structures like gosub, for/next, and goto, which helps kids easily see how program flow-control works. It has a built-in graphics mode which lets them draw pictures on screen in minutes, and a set of detailed, easy-to-follow tutorials that introduce programming concepts through fun exercises.

 

KidBASIC is licensed under the GNU public license, which means that it's free to download, modify, and share.

Oh No, they better not as I am getting fed up of having to know about every bit of software on the entire computer system, and I know diddly squat about programming so I would be really up you know what creek without a paddle.

If you dson't have a religious objection to closed source software then there is also JustBASIC and KPL. Both are freeware but not FLOSS.

 

KPL is probably better as it provides more bang per line of code which is the kind of feedback younger students will warm to.

 

Lastly, don't forget MSW Logo.

 

For older kids don't forget Visual Studio now comes as part of School Agreement. Failing that there is always the 2005 Express series of languages.

I am looking forward to programming being put on the curriculum. I work freelance training teachers subjects like Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and programming.

 

I have been teaching Visual BASIC but have now added 2d and 3d games design to my list of offerings in advance of changes to the curriculum.
