Little-Miss Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Cogs are going in my brain at the moment. Trying to make a wishlist for the head for what i'd like to spend the new budget on. One thing that popped into my head was starting to phase out the stupid Promethean Becta boxes. So are there any compact base units that i can use soley for the IWB? Good enough to run the usual programs, a decent prices and as small as possible.

Acer Veriton N260G Nettop PC - Misco.co.uk Seems it would handle most applications. it's Vista installed but has downgrade to XP Pro if you're not wanting to go the vista route. It's got enough USB ports to power the board and mouse keyboard etc.. The only downside i can see is if your board is an older type with serial connection then you'd have to buy a serial to usb converter 1

If you know what laptops/netbooks you are going to/are using most manufactures offer docking stations where the device just slides in and then to remove all you do is press a button and slide. Although it is generally better to get a second power supply if you do this so you don't need to remove it from the dock. 1

It comes with a bracket for mounting to a standard VESA mount, so eaither buy a cheap wall-mount bracket (£5 - £10) or simply swap the standard mount screws for something you can use with rawl plugs and bolt them straight to the wall. This handily means you can do away with the need for wiring in a faceplate panel for each IWB, too - just use standard cables that you plug straight in to the PC, it looks a lot neater (cables lay flat to the wall, for a start, they don't stick out at 90 degrees) and saves money. We got our N260G's from Acer Outlet, a site sponser, for £220 each a little while back - at that kind of price you can afford to get staff one each for home use, too (I got one for my girlfriend, it mounts on the back of her flatscreen TV, she doesn't even notice it's there). -- David Hicks 1

plexer Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 We use the N260G's here all you have to do as said is mark through the holes drill, plug and screw the vesa mount to the wall and click it down then attach the unit itself. Ben

dtakias Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 As Intel released a whole new series of Atom CPU's this year we should have many new nettops quite soon from Acer and other companies... Interesting point is that some models from the Z500 series support VT-x which means you can use XP mode under W7.

chrisgoodrich Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 We have got a whole suite of Acer Aspire Revo's had them in since the summer with no problems at all, got them from oyyy.co.uk for just over £200 each. The use very little power, mounted to the back of the monitor they take up very little space and we have had no issues with heat so we have not had to install air conditioning in to the room.
