Geoff Posted October 18, 2006 Author Posted October 18, 2006 Really proves nothing in the great Microsoft is better than Linux Where did I say it was better? you and I both know that tit for tatting on the business' that use MS or Linux is pointless perhaps, but it's a fun way to waste an hour at work because none of my Linux servers are require any of my technical support. Damn Linux reliablility! I could just spout some multinational I'm game, the Top 5 in the Fortune 500 are as follows: 1. Exxon Mobil 2. Wal-Mart Stores 3. General Motors 4. Chevron 5. Ford Motors Lets go see what their websites run on shall we? Over to netcraft! 1. Win2k 2. Solaris 3. Solaris 4. Win2k 5. Linux So that's 1 - 2 on Linux vs Windows. But 4 - 1 on Open vs Proprietary.

My spectrum is better than your commodore, my ST is better than your amiga, my playstation is better than your nintendo. I would at this point like to disassociate myself for the viewers here, from this extreme level of geekdom (anyway..everyone knows IBM OS/2 is the best)

THe reason we in schools wont be using Vista for years is we can't afford the hardware upgrade I'd bet we all have equipment installed now that we still expect to be there in 5 years. Security and reliablilty matter most to us. In other places features are king and they will be upgrading as soon as they can get they're hands on it. Vista uses 3d hardware all the time because its useful. Video chips have more transistors than single core desktop processors now. Thats alot of comupting power you paid for to just turn off. I personally am very impresed with the new desktop rendering implimentation in Vista. I certainly can't run a 720p HD video on one screen and WoW or Dawn of war full screen or windowed on the other under XP. On Vista tho I can even drag them around. Direct X10 integration on the desktop is a good thing for anyone who uses they're PC for more than office work. Even scrolling a web page benefits. I didn't argue that. I was just killing some time at work. It was webman who was suggesting migrating to Linux Let's hope MS screw it up and sicken people off so they convert to open-source I even rebutted his point. As per our current poll it seems most people will simply stick with XP. It's certainly easier than a Linux migration. Especially when you already have a large investment in the infrastructure. You might want to read the thread your replying to in future lest you look foolish.

Funding prior to BSF will dry up and I predict many schools will deploy linux. BSF will bring waves of new computers and centralised server farms running the latest MS sponsored software. Schools will jump at the chance to have the latest whizzy MS graphics only to be tied into an outsourced company to the detriment of local support and innovation.
