Getting a puppy tomorrow - Siberian Husky.

 

Good websites with clear advice for training a dog anyone?

 

I'm a big follower of Cesar Milan's Dog Whisperer and aim to put a lot of his practical advice to use but anywhere with easy to follow guidance would be welcome.

When my ex and I got a dog, she was posting on there and the advice they gave was very good.

 

We didn't use any negative training (ie. no punishment or negative reinforcement), instead using positive reinforcement in the form of the clicker training method. Worked very well too - we got a year old dog which hated other dogs to not want to run and kill them, instead he just ignored them. That took about 3 weeks training.

If I were you I would look around for local puppy training classes. You can still follow your own ideas but it would give you the basics and it would introduce your new dog to other dogs in a controlled environment, giving you the chance to spot any problems before they get too big

Siberian Huskys are not a one man dog - they need another dog or unless you are going to get a pair of them or something. Also fencing needs to be 6ft and they love digging underneath the fence and are great escape artists - plenty of advise on things you can do to help stop them from escaping etc - also can't really let them off to run around until you have mastered the art of making sure they will come back to you when called.

 

Any chance you can post pics when you get ya husky as I was looking into this the last month or so as I wanted one but won't be getting one for a long time now.

Closely followed by "America's Next Top Model"...

 

I believe Huskies are very intelligent and need loads of exercise and mental stimulation to help control their potentially boisterous behaviour.

Will there be someone at home to look after him/her during the day, as I think this is important for this type of dog, even more so for a puppy.

My local vet do 'Puppy Parties', it was free and it helps dogs get used to each other. Quite funny watching them all interact for the first time.

Are you getting a dog crate?? I would highly recommend one! Invaluble with a young puppy!! Make sure you make it a nice place for them .... treat when they go in and some toys in there. Make sure you regulate what goes in the puppy and when..then you can regulate what goes out and when!!

My family used to train Guide Dogs through their first year, before they go and do their blindness specific training.

 

They taught us some hard fast rules and we've used them on every dog we've had since, and they've all been fantastic (if certifiably insane).

Thanks for all the replies folks - really helpful.

 

I'll post pics in the next couple of days - off to pick him up tonight.

 

There'll only be one afternoon a week (typically) when he'll be on his own but we won't let that happen while he's a puppy.

 

We thought about getting two at once but seems like a bit much, we're thinking of getting him a pal to play with in 6 or 12 months time.

I'm sure he won't be as bad as my little boy was. Thankfully he sleeps through the night now (he's nearly 2).
