Unfortunately it is no longer a rescue mission and is now more about rebuild and repair. Until you realise that the costs involved in hosting a server cluster, paying for bandwidth, supporting it, merchant account and payment gateway fees probably far outweigh even that 5%... A commercial operation would markup easily around 7%+ of any transactions and they've probably had to work VERY hard with banks, etc... to get that down as much as possible. Just a thought, and sorry to take this slightly off-topic, but this kind of thinking is akin to arguing that charity staff should work for free and live on the street... Anyway, coming back to the genius fundraiser... Kudos aplenty... Here's hoping he goes on to Uni, many years from now and kicks ass in their Rag..

Not an argument I totally agree with, but I take your point. Do you agree at least that Just Giving should make their fee more public, perhaps even changing the amounts donated to reflect that fee? I know someone who looked into using JG for the charity they set up. To register as a charity on JG you have to pay a monthly fee, then their are the fees we have mentioned on top. For a small charity, this takes away a massive amount of the funding, far outweighing the use that JG serves. I suppose my argument is that JG can charge what ever it likes, but should make those charges far more obvious to the generous public who just go to Charlie Simpsons page and hit donate. Little Charlie will wake up today to find he has raised 136 thousand, which is a massive feet that deserves praise. Sadly he will have actually raise a little less than 130 thousand, and I bet most of the people who donated, would not realise that. In addition to that, I would say that some charity workers are good, some bad like in any other profession. However, when a charity spends more money on marketing than the cause they were created to support, something has gone wrong.
localzuk Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Well done that lad! On the fee issue - 5% is very low for most charity collection costs. I was once told by a charity funding guy that when you have one of those collection people on the street trying to get you to sign up to a direct debit for a charity, they usually need something like 20 people just to break even, to pay for the collectors.
