sparkeh Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Anyone else using embc webserver 2 getting a "500 Internal Server Error"? Got three sites down. Started on Friday intermittently but now just down.

I have sent you a PM with my call reference if they want to escalate this as a wider issuer. I did tell them that other schools reported the issue, so they're aware. Edu-IT Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 This morning we where experiencing high usage levels on the server some other school also had the same issue. We have identified that the problem is intermittent and will continue to monitor the situation to diagnose a re-occurrence Funny how it started Friday. I've asked them to confirm what they considor to be a high load as it seems that this is becoming a regular occurance.
sparkeh Posted January 29, 2010 Author Posted January 29, 2010 Had an update today. Apparently one website had a virus which tied up a lot of resources on the webserver. The problem should be fixed but I am still experiencing intermittent downtime. Any one else have problems still?

Syentrix's on going investigation into why the performance depleated. This was an EMBC wide issue effecting many schools that use PHP
Edu-IT Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 You lie... The information that there was a virus on the server has no truth in it. It was a performance issues and has not re-occurred. Further investigation are on going to why performance level dropped.

Hi Mark, Could you please confirm if these websites are now all working OK? We did find a virus had infected another website that is hosted on this server which was tying up some services. This has now been cleared and the server appears to be behaving much better now.

sparkeh Posted February 1, 2010 Author Posted February 1, 2010 Last update on Friday evening was that the issue is restricted to PHP sites. Monitoring has been setup on my sites to try and find the problem.

Yep, it is only affecting PHP sites, is not linked with the same server load problems there were during snow-days, is being monitored to see whether any specific code in particular sites has large, inefficient queries or possible malicious code (possibly injected) linking in to trojan downloaders. Those whose sites are being monitored are likely to get notified of an update earlier than me as there are no Northants sites in the problem list. Ultimately the code on the site is in the control of the website administrator for that site. If you are using PHP-based sites please make sure you are patched on your versions of Joomla, etc. If I do hear of anything before you lot I will put an update up here.

gonzodad Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Willott / sparkey – there’s a potential performance issue on one of the embc webservers, the peeps in support (who dealt with a similar problem a few months ago - ref the start of this thread) are looking at it. My (limited!) understanding of the platform is that when performance issues happen, its fastcgi/php that gets affected more notably. Suggest you get fault calls logged with the relevant helpdesk, because any info will help them troubleshoot and create an appropriate problem ticket. 1
