Put it this way - I am more likely to do business with a company if their staff are personable and friendly. This is one of the reasons I buy from CP - Joe, Simon et al are always friendly and chatty. I'm sick of businesses having their staff sound like they hate their jobs.

So, in essence, more of people like Danielle and Simon!

This is called "f!sh", after the Seattle fish market that started making their employee's have fun at work, and saw their sales boom.

or thats what the Customer Service 'experts' we have advising us call it.

It does work to the extreme, the team that deal with payments of dept use it, and you have people walking away that have just paid $$$$ with a huge smile on their face.

i went back and read a few of those posts in New Users, and as i was reading along started to think that maybe 'Danielle' was confusing Edugeek with twitter. ;)

Then Dos_Box comes out with the 'this isn't Facebook' line which was very amusing. Though quite why so many users felt the need to clog up the mod's inbox instead of saying as much on the thread in one short, sharp sentence or two is one of the mysteries of this place.

Actually, it's no mystery, maybe some people are fearful of being labelled 'unhelpful' or 'sneering' if they are a tad blunt in some of their comments.

in defence of "Ring Of Flame" i would say that the women of the forum would see danielle's posts in a darker light , I'm come on if i got one of our people to sign up with a avatar showing a pair of legs and then starting a thread feeling frisky I'm sure its going to be mostly ment that reply,

I think the point is tone it down a little she did come on strong and if you look deep enough into it you will see past the female bravodo and know it just another way of getting a new lead customer what have you,

dont get me wrong its great to have a fresh face on the scene but male or female, now how would you guys feel if it was a guy started that thread and he had a avatar showing him in no top and wearing shorts muscles everywhere , think about it how many of you would be pm'in dos_box to moan about it ,

just my out of work two pennies worth;)

@Theeldergeek - you post some really good stuff, and I enjoy it but you don't half troll too ... but I do like the style you do it in ... reminds me of a barrack-room lawyer I once knew. He completely changed when he got a commission ... don't change ...

Was thinking of simply shutting the :censored: up, and this has made ma mind up. Thanks folks, enjoyed Edugeek, to a point. There's more to life than arguing with 'avatars' and being labeled as someone who can only give an unqualified opinion.

There's no need for that. As I say to everyone who thinks I'm taking things personally - I'm not. Why would I? Its a forum. Everyone expresses their opinions and their lives go on. Whilst the site continues to be an invaluable tool to our profession.

The thing is, we are all just 'someone who can only give an unqualified opinion'. That is the nature of anonymous discussions.

Personally? I wouldn't be bothered - but then, I'm a bleeding heart liberal who doesn't find things like that to be an issue :p Unless they're rugby players running down my street in the buff singing drunken songs of course, lol.

Sheesh ... did you not get my point? You push the boundaries ... you provoke debate ... you know you do and it s fun to but heads at times. I know some people change over the years ... see the bit that says "don't change".

Did you not get the point that I was trying to provoke a response? That is what trolls do ... and the bloody good ones do it from a position of knowledge and experience.

@stratisphere

lol ... love that it was an actual link.

Reminds me of spending a friday afternoon at the first school I did support at. We were testing i-Gear (as it was before being bought by Symantec, and subsequently became Symantec Web Security). We were randomly thinking of anything that could be porn related and turning it into a URL and seeing if i-Gear blocked it. Scary the number of sites that were real and the number that got through the URL search. Thankfully the text filters blocked them. There was a fantastic site taking the mickey out of pr0n ... all cartoons of prawns. Never found it again since ... and then there was another site which had a massive gif of a women in 'serious clothes' who was spanking a hard drive ... that poor IBM case took a right battering.

The site did advertise a kinkier site where they took screw drivers to motherboards ... but that was a step too far for a naive young lad!

Maybe, maybe not. As one of the "women of the forum" (primary and more mature at that :D) I read the original post in the spirit with which it was probably intended... smiled to myself and even added a post on the thread and then lost interest as the thread grew too long for me to keep up and do some work.

I seem to remember Mandy posting a couple of provocatively titled threads not so long ago without this hoo-ha. Calm down you lot.

@Danielle welcome and I hope that a few calmer days will now ensue and that you can enjoy edugeek as I do :)

We need a new status ... forget EduSupporter, etc ... EduTroll.

I like that idea :D that would be hilarous, there could even be special ceremony threads where they are awarded for services to Trolling :D

I do wonder how long it would be before I was presented with one though :D

This thread (in its latest merge / fusion!) seems to be much calmer with some senior and influential people also suggesting yesterday was handled quite badly. That is good to see, and being a member who usually only posts on technical threads, makes me feel slightly less controversial!

What I would be interested in seeing now is a post from which ever mod(s) decided to lock / censor / move content. How does it work with you? Personal opinion, or following rules that you are privy to?

Was this

I have to say, Dos_Box's "not Facebook" post was a pretty awful way to treat a professional, representing an IT company that may ultimately have added to your list of sponsors! I would point out that previous discussions regarding site / user rules would have prevented the entire issue - New users would know how to behave, and hopefully members would have had a say in what those rules are.... But I believe that is a subject is somewhere between off-limits and being talked about by admins!

For anyone who has read my previous posts (as said above, largely technical/work only) you might be forgiven for wondering if I've had my account hijacked - but in fact, I am just increasingly disillusioned.

I used to feel (correctly or incorrectly) a valued part of a strong community. With recent negativities I am feeling like most of us are wasting our time here. We should get our technical assistance and then sign out. I'm not sure that is really in keeping with the vision for this site.... is it?

Perhaps this whole issue would have been best discussed only with those involved behind closed doors? (Email? Skype?)

Problem is now too many people have their opinions to put in and it's making it boom again! Remove the post, if necessary explain why the post was removed in a locked thread and contact those individuals privately who need reminding of anything. If anyone then wants to put in their 2p worth they can contact the management.
