Lock workstations

does anyone know of any software that will allow teachers to lock the kids computers when they are talking and then unlock them when they have finished.

 

A PGCE student mentioned the idea to the head of ICT and he thinks the idea is wonderful.

 

Does anyone use anything like this?

AB Tutor control, NetOp, NetSupport School, Ranger, RM CC3 ... or telling the students to stop what they are doing or else.

 

I like monitoring and control software, but hate it when it becomes a crutch for poor classroom management.

Too right. Some people need to be reminded that teaching is not a technological problem.

I've decided to give Lanview 3 a try, but i can't get my test pc to list in the server.

I have added exceptions in the windows xp firewall, made sure the service is started on the test pc and even gone as far as turn the firewall off on the 2 pc's i'm using, but it still doesn't show in the all stations group.

 

Is there something i'm missing?

Used this before and it worked fine on a suite of 15 PC`s .

Impero is brilliant for this and dirt cheap as well and gives you loads of other features such as locking websites, apps etc

I'm trying to get lanview working, has anyone got this working on their network? I can't seem to see any pc's in the all stations list.

dezt, I assume you've rolled out the LanView client and it's running on each workstation?

i've only rolled out the client on 1 workstation to test it, but for some reason it doesn't show up.

 

I can ping the workstation and the windows firewall is switched off.

I don't suppose anyone knows the default tightvnc password for lanview. If you do can you pm or e-mail me please.

1) Drop into DOS and CD to the folder containing VNC (usually program files \ orl \ vnc). Type winvnc -defaultsettings and press [enter]. A GUI box will appear and you can now change the password for all users. Now restart the VNC service (which will disconnect you if you're using it!)

 

2) Use REGEDIT and connect to the remote computer. Look for the key called: HKLM\Software\ORL\Winvnc3\default. Change the encoded password to one from a box that you know works (nb: you could delete any user account entries that you don't want).

 

3) Use one of the vnc password tools and Xcmd / PsExec to change the password remotely.

 

4) Use the Fastpush script from http://www.darkage.co.uk
