Laptop touchpad not working when power plugged in

I have a Toshiba laptop that works fine when used on the battery.

Once the power supply is plugged in the mouse/touchpad refuses to cooperate, it moves randomly and shakes over the screen and is completely unusable. A USB mouse works fine both on battery and on power, it is just the touchpad that goes when the power is plugged in. If the power is unplugged the touchpad stops responding altogether.

The battery charges fine though I suspect the problem is caused by a faulty power supply

Any ideas?

 

Not a school laptop just one of those friendly help me jobs so no other power supply to try.

Not got a multimeter no, will check with the science technician.

I'd also try the simple stuff ~reinstalling Toshiba's touchpad driver... I recall they do a power management app as well, so it's not inconceivable that they're interfering with one another...

 

But if they are, it's not by design, so there may be an issue in the current installation of those progs/drivers.

 

BIOS Update might not be a bad idea either, I've seen more than one PSU issue resolve by this.

Been to busy to try too much with it, will just recommend using a USB mouse with it.

Would love to be able to identify the problem but just don't have the time

Seems very strange, but undoubtedly a hardware problem and nothing software can fix.

I've just had a few cases where the Toshiba touchpad has disabled itself! One of the users said it was immediately after an update.

Had a similar issue where the touch-pad and keyboard stopped working once you logged in (was ok on welcome screen)

 

Remove power and Battery, press the power butting for about 20 secs (discharge any static?) then reconnect battery and power cable.
