My little d40 can take some pretty good snaps but is no where near the quality of my 50D, then again my d50 set up cost 15 times as much. Compacts don't even come close to a DSLR.

westleya Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I like Olympus stuff, even though I've got all Canon kit. I had an early Olypmus E10 DSLR, the build quality was higher than that of my Canon 20D. The E-10's lens was excellent. The pictures is took were fabulous, and still hold up well, even though it was only 4 Mpixels. Confusing, eh? Yeah, I'm a fan of Olympus as well, despite being a Pentax boy. Always wanted an OM40 when I was younger....

I had an OM1 and an OM2..... both were silky smooth, light.... well engineered; my Nikon F100 & D300 are brutes by comparison.... The F100 continued to work faultlessly after having being dropped on cobblestones in Amsterdam a few years back... it cost my insurance company a packet to restore it to 'as new' ......
jdoyle Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 we purchased a Canon EOS400D with an 18-55mm lens for the school a few years back from Dabs. Got 3 x 4Gb memory cards with it . Should have splashed out for a camera bag too. I use the built in flash and have never (yet) felt the need to go for an external flash. Already had a tripod. This unit has been working extremely well; some good photos produced and no problems experienced. Bought a 55-250mm lens to go with it which gets used for Sports Day and some presentations in the main hall. The output gets used on the school website, intranet, VLE, digital signage units, wi-fi photoframes, screensavers, the occasional press release, school literature and more recently in support of a planning application. I now take the staff photos for ID cards with it. It only gets used by myself and one of the techs in the same office so expecting it to last a reasonably long time. For general student/staff use we have a mix of cheapo compact digital cameras and FujiFilm DSLRs. Some staff have iPhones and we're just gearing up to using these for school trip updates/blog photos.
mossj Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I love my Sony A200, well built and sound... Does the job and does it without a complaint. I have also head good things about the budget Canon. Last time I checked the budget Nikon didn't have autofocus, so maybe a problem if younger kids are using it.

Nikon budget option last year didn't or it's kit lens supllied wasn't AF. p.s just checked on amazon and this years does. RinSewand Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Jessops stocked it for a while - £16,995. It's got two stabilisation motors in it, one for normal stabilisation, and one to remove the vibration caused by the camera shutter... RwD
