eddyc Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Does anybody know if it is possible to disable hibernation and sleep in Windows 7 via GPO - we only want to apply it to our worksatins and not to our staff laptops and therefore doing it locally would not be an acceptable option - as we use one image for all hardware. Any help is appreciated. Ed
sidewinder Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Can you not create a power plan in control panel settings>power options? You can set time to sleep and hibernate, so I assume setting to 0 would turn them off? Dont know if you need server 2008 for it to work though

SYNACK Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 you can switch off hybernation in command prompt: Open an elevated Command Prompt with administrator rights by typing Cmd in Start Search, and then hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter and then type powercfg /hibernate off Its not via Group policy but may help out a bit
SYNACK Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 (edited) This should remove or at least disable sleep: Removing the Sleep function in the Shutdown menu - Vista Forums and you could probably make it into an ADMX template to do it via GP. also: To disable the sleep selection on the start menu: Create the registry key below if it does not already exist HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Power\PowerSettings\abfc2519-3608-4c2a-94ea-171b0ed546ab Create the Dword "ACSettingIndex" and set value to 0 To disable hibernation: At an elevated cmd prompt type - "powercfg -h off" This is the group policy setting for the sleep disable: Power.admx Machine System\Power Management\Sleep Settings Allow Standby States (S1-S3) When Sleeping (Plugged In) At least Windows Vista Dictates whether or not Windows is allowed to use standby states when sleeping the computer. When this policy is enabled, Windows may use standby states to sleep the computer. If this policy is disabled, the only sleep state a computer may enter is hibernate. Disable Sleep and/or Hibernation by all users There is also this which is by GP but takes the start menu with it: http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7/remove-the-shut-down-restart-sleep-and-hibernate-buttons/ Edited January 19, 2010 by SYNACK
ranj Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 I am currently deploying 7 out to some workstations. On testing though I am finding that desktops and laptops are frequently going to sleep after about 10 minutes. The machines have to be pressed on by the power button for them to resume windows. Can I disable this via GPO if so how would I do it. Can someone provide me with the GPO link? We are running Windows 7 enterprise 32 bit supported by Windows 2008 DC's (not r2).
ZeroHour Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 This is actually quite easy for parts of it, in w7 gpo you should take a look at: computer conf->Policies->System->Power Management in there you can tweak all the times, buttons etc. To disable hibernate/sleep just set those settings in "Sleep Settings" to 0 and boom it should be off. 1
DMcCoy Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 You can turn sleep off with GP, to turn hibernate off completely use "powercfg -h off" in the SetupComplete.cmd file which runs after sysprep/WDS. This file is run with elevated privileges. I have tried scripting powercfg with startup scripts and GPP but it doesn't seem to get elevated with those methods. 2
