jamesfed Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Hi all, Were looking at getting a shiny new D2D2T backup system and it looks like were going down the RM Route (for reasons beyond control) – RM.com Shop: RM Disk to Disk to Tape Total Backup Solution However in contact with our account manager it seems like the system runs entirely off RAID0 (all 8 1TB HDDs) and uses Windows Storage Server 2003 32bit. To me RAID0 is a problem as if one of the HDDs fails in the array then the entire OS will need to be reloaded. Also SS2k3 32bit is problem on the account that the 64bit version is readily available and would (in my view) be a better option on the account of stability and speed of processing (even if there will be very limited processing needs). So what I’d like to know is if anyone has any comments as to if I should push for these features and if anyone has any comments on the RM system as a end user. Thanks! James

Therefore everyday we have two backups in separate physical locations*. Every week a tape backup is made which is taken offsite (there's no reason why this couldn't be everyday). All this achieved for vastly less than the RM D2D2T solution which I can't see offers a great deal more protection? *If something happens to the RM D2D2T box (eg fire) then you could lose everything onsite, my way you still have an onsite source ready to step in in case a restore is needed. 5tu Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 James We implemented our own D2D2T solution, with a 64-bit server, but used RM's documentation for the implementation and configuration of BackUp Exec. Works a treat and a fraction of the cost! HTH 1

Unfourtanly due to many (mainly political) reasons we wont be doing anything but RM, would love to hear a little more on your choices of a 64bit OS and whatever RAID levels you use though

That was my origional thinking but again its politics Just as the poster below I'd love to hear any views you have on selection of a OS and RAID levels.

Intresting to hear how you used RAID0 - could I ask how long it takes you to backup however much it is that you backup.

Thanks again I'd really like to hear some speeds/space backed up from some people using RAID5/similar if anyone has such a system.
Tallwood_6 Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 The spec and load on the server that it is backing up from seems to make quite a difference with regards to general backup speed the newest server with an agent gets 800MB/min while one of the older boxes only gets 625MB/min. The Autoloader speed i get nearly 5,000 MB/min but this is attached via SCSI and is only dealing with one duplication at at time.
jamesfed Posted January 19, 2010 Author Posted January 19, 2010 Hate to 'bump up a thread' but does anyone else have any experiances/suggestions with the RM Disk Box and using RAID0 for the entire HDD array? Some more figures on how long its taking people to backup how much would be great to.
