Heres a question for everyone......

If your school said that you had a budget of 150k to spend this year for IT, what latest a greatest things would you spend it on?

Upgrading our aged infrastructure, replacing edge switches and fibre between buidings and maybe getting a server or two in the other building. at present if we lose power to one building with the server room in, the other has no DC or file access.

A network which is not so dependant upon the support of an individual to keep it up and running so that when support staff move on it is not such a big issue.

Nothing that required a year on year cost ... no point spending on a new suite as I wouldn't know if I could replace it when needed.

Would rather pay for staff time to do stuff, infrastructure changes if needed, making sure teaching and admin staff were IT literate ... and possibly create a few small pots of money for R&D.

A test network for the support team to try things, some new hardware for teachers that want to be adventurous, cover for teachers and techies to visit other schools.

I'm assuming that this is over and above standard IT expenditure? If so I'd be looking at replacing switches, rolling out a site wide managed WiFi solution, a new phone system and staff training. Possibly some storage stuff in there as well ;)

I'd ask where the rest of my budget had vanished to!

But then, I'd look at switches, an iSCSI SAN, and virtualising the servers across some load balanced hosts. Maybe look at a DR room in a different building.

Roll out full wifi coverage (at the moment we've started with aruba but run out of mony to buy more client boxes)

Replace the entire network backbone and coreswitch with 10GB kit

Couple of server upgrades and SPARES!!!!

with that much money i would probably look at spending a nice chunk on a very fast iSCSI box too with alot more space that we currently have

Replace the slowest of the PCs around the school

...the only time we ever had a budget that big was when we had 165 new PCs and a whole new building going in :(
