Ah, security theatre how I loathe thee.

 

Let's screw up travels for millions of people, make business travel a bloody minefield for anyone needing to transport electronic equipment (switches/routers/etc), randomly change the rules at stupidly short notice all to pretend that we can catch someone.

That's why terrorists do it, not (mainly) because of the loss of life, but because of the FUD and disruption to our lives.

Sadly, very few governments have the balls to say "it's business as usual, you're more likely to get eaten by the beast of bodmin than assploded in a terrorist attack".

I remember reading a quote after the most recent attempt (can't find it now unfortunately) from a security consultant who opined that by far the most effective change in aviation since the 2001 attack is that passengers now know how they should deal with airborne attackers.

 

Specifically, lynch them as fast as possible, because you've everything to lose if you don't.

It's not just governments who spread FUD. After the Cumbria train crash in 2007, Carol Vorderman was being interviewed (think it was a review of the papers thing) and made some stupid comment about how dangerous train travel had become. If a woman who is supposed to be good at maths can't see the basic stats involved, what chance has anyone else got!
