You might be better with an off the shelf system like a Linkstation then. Unless you want to underclock a system.

If you keep your files on a networked server/NAS rather than the media centre itself you can get away with a silent power supply like these: http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=10

Couple that with an IDE Flash memory module http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=16#2621 and you've got a truly silent system.

 

It's what I'm planning on building once I get a little more spare cash.

All I want to do is file storage for my MP3's, Video Clips and iso files mainly. I'm toying with the idea of using a 400MHz Celereon cpu and removing the fan on it for starters as I have access to a few of these and seeing how well it would run.

I do. My fileserver is an Athlon system booting FreeNAS off a CompactFlash card. It's under the stairs, and the noise isn't a problem. It's just the media PC (MiniITX, and running GeeXboX) has a power supply in it that gets very hot if I unplug the case fans. It's not on all the time though so not that much of a problem when watching something with plenty of action

re mini-itx boards, just an FYI

 

The one's I've played with (Epia 5000 and ML6000), don't have very good network performance under heavy fileserving. On 100BaseT I was getting 4-6M/s intel -> via and realtek -> via. An intel -> intel or intel -> realtek using the same switch and cables was running at 8-9M/s.

 

This was under debian, moving 5G of video files via samba.

PCI cards, nothing fancy though. Running under debian or ubuntu.
