[gentoo] lsusb doesnt show WD Passport external HD

I had to send my 250gb external WD Passport back to WD as a warranty, had the replacement shipped to my folks so they can fill it up with stuff and post it back to me.

 

I had them plug it into my gentoo box, but I cannot see it either in fdisk or lsusb.

 

I had them put it in my other gentoo box and the same, I cant see it. I then had them try it in their laptop and it works fine.

 

USB hard drives have worked in my gentoo boxes before and Ive done nothing to change them.. Any idea why it wouldnt be showing up on 2x different boxes?

 

And is there another command I can try to see if it detects it?

The linux side will be geoff or someone else so can't help on how to detect it or make it work etc but just as a thought either share the drive if possible or put everything into one folder and share that folder from the windows box and access it from the gentoo box that way ?

Not sure. The servers are up in a rack and its a bit of a hassel for them to keep climbing up and plug - unplug ;p

 

How long does dmesg keep its log for?

@mac_addict: I dont have smb properly enabled in the kernel on the box with all the stuff I want to copy it from so cant mount windows shares. And Ive never got round to fixing that problem.

 

@kmount: One thing I am thinking though.. On one of the machines theres 2* Windows Servers runniing in Virtualbox. Could one of them be taking over the USB function? Ive not specified anything abuout USB in my Vbox setup though.

most likely a very long shot here and will leave the linux side to kmount / geoff etc as not even going to pretend I know anything about linux

 

get them to go into the bios and make sure its enabled in the bios on both machines for anything usb related ie usb mouse, usb keyboard, usb in general etc are all enabled.

 

Also has the wd passport hdd got more then one connection ie 2 usb ports, 2 firewire 400, 1 firewire 800 ???

 

Just wondering if you try another usb port either on the device or on the gentoo box and see if that helps also making sure its a usb port on the back not on the front panel ie underneath the network card connection

as i said previously the wd was replacing a previous one that worked. Usb KB works too. Its a server so no GUI to test mouse, but all other USB devices have workeed for the 7+ years of the server ;p

Do you have the ability to get another usb storage device plugged in to see whether it's just not liking the WD or whether it's everything that's not a usb keyboard.

 

Tried plugging the usb hdd into the usb keyboard port?

Finally solved this problem. Turns out it was a dodgy usb cable that was supplied with the WD.

 

For some reason it would work with windows, but not linux.

 

The solution was discovered by accident
